An incomplete ceramic tile of Roman date (AD 43 - 410) with probable opus signinum concrete attached. Description The tile is rectangular in plan but one corner has been lost with a 45 degree break approximately 140mm long. Concrete is attached to both faces and 120mm of one edge, from which it overhangs by about 31mm. The concrete on one face retains most of the surface where it attached to the next tile, and finishes with a straight edge 90mm from the complete short edge of the tile. The thickness of the concrete on this face increases evenly from 45mm to 50mm. A sub rectangular piece of ceramic, crudely moulded. It is orange in colour with some large inclusions. It is a corner of a large, thick tile, with slightly inward sloping sides. One the top of the tile, two crossing lines have been scratched in while the clay was wet, presumably to enable adherence of plaster or similar. It is likely to be part of a hypocaust or box flue system. Found in the vicinity of Roman tile kilns and may possibly have been manufactured there, clay pits have also been identified at the site. Dimensions: 98mm long and 60mm wide, it is 31mm thick and weighs …

A fragment of a ceramic object, likely a tile of Roman date (c. AD 43-410). The object is roughly parallelogram in plan and has a sub-rectangular cross section. The object has reddish-orange surfaces, margins, and core. The fabric has sparse to moderate, poorly sorted coarse quartz inclusions, along with possible sparse grog tempering. One side is largely flat whilst the other has the remnants of a paw print of an animal. Due to the size (23.21mm wide and 20.82mm), lack of clear claw marks, and asymmetry of the paw print, it is most likely the paw print of a cat. Dimen…

A worn fragment of Roman tile, 70mm in length and 28.7mm thick, possibly originally from a large tegula (roof tile). The fabric is orange-brown and generally well sorted with a few large inclusions. There is a partial stamp on one side, with letters PR[...] in a rectangular escutcheon. This is likely an abbreviation of PR(OCURATORES) indicating that the tile was produced at a tileworks under the remit of the Imperial procurator, of a type associated with public buildings in the 1st to 2nd century AD. Cf. Betts (1995) Die Type 7.
