A copper alloy door knob type spear butt of the Roman or early Medieval period, circa 200-300 AD or 500 to 600AD. The object comprises a hollow shaft, tapering outwards slightly at the open end, with two concentric grooves around the neck. This then expands where it joins the 'door knob' terminal, at which point there is a moulded groove around the neck. The terminal is bulbous and also hollow and it has a rounded base. The metal is pitted and mottled with a green patina. An example near identical in appearance on the database is&nbs…

An iron possible spear or Roman pilum, possibly dating from AD 43 - 410. It is 124.4mm long, 17.9mm wide and 17.8mm thick. It weighs 101.03g. It is sub-square in cross section, with two thirds of the length being the head, and one third is part of the shank. The head tapers to a point. The base of the head is 17.8mm by 17.9mm and is also a short square pyramid, sloping to the shank which is also of square section, but uneven and bent. The shank is 6.5mm x 7mm. The tip of the shank tapers to a break. The form is similar to Roman pila such as HESH-C7A503 and examples from Hod Hill …

An incomplete iron spear head dating to the Roman period. The spear possesses an open socket which is broken. The socket expands to a leaf-shaped blade with a long tapering point, the tip of which is missing. The edges of the blade are noticeably blunt and it is possible that this was not actually a functional weapon. The spear measures 130mm in length, with the socket measuring 35mm in length. The diameter of the socket is 13mm. The blade has a length of 95mm and a maximum width of 34mm. It has a thickness of 4mm. It weighs 46g.

A copper-alloy 'Door Knob' spear butt of Roman or Early Medieval date, c. 200-300 AD or 500-600 AD. The object consists of a hollow plano-convex base, which extends upwards with a hollow flaring cylinder. The upper face of the convex part has traces of a raised circular section, which is where the cylinder meets the plano-convex element. The flat face has denting and a small perforation (1 mm of diameter) due probably to the use. The outer surface is corroded and abraded. These objects were once thought to be Iron Age in date, however they are now known to be of either Roman or Ear…

The object comprises a hollow circular shaft, tapering slightly from the open end before expanding to form the door knob terminal. The terminal is bulbous and hollow. There is a moulded ridge at the base of the terminal, and three incised lines around the circumference near the open end of the shaft. The metal is largely a mid brownish-green in colour. Copper alloy cast 'Door Knob' Spear Butt possibly dating from Roman to Early-Medieval date, c. 200-300 AD or 500-600 AD. The neck/elongated ferrule of the device has a flared opening that then tapers down to a midpoint, when it again flares back out to join with the top knob. There is a cast circumferential ridge/line at the point beneath the expanded knob terminal and further decoration just above the rim, in the form of four concentric grooves. It is possible that the item was cast hollow and then filled with perhaps lead, to add momentum to the action of the spear. These objects…

A possible worn and corroded iron spear, perhaps a pilum of Roman date. It has a tapering shaft that is cylindrical in section with an incomplete socket at the attachment end. At the terminal end the shaft tapers to a flattened blade, most of which is incomplete due to old breaks. This is sub-oval in form, perhaps tapering towards a pointed tip, but the precise shape remains uncertain given the preservation of the object. It measures 288mm in surviving length, 15.91mm in width/diameter at socket, 35.04mm in surviving width at blade, and 147.46g in weight. The precise form of this o…

A Roman iron spearhead which can be classified as a Manning Type 3 (Narrow Blade with expansion at its base). The spearhead measures 127mm in length, a maximum of 46mm in width and 3mm in thickness. It weighs 47 grams. There is a great deal of debate regarding the function of standard tips. It seems certain that they are not spearheads as close inspection of well-preserved examples has shown not just that the sides are blunt but that they never had a cutting edge. Marchant 1990 has suggested that standard tips had a decorative function connected with the use of the spearhead as a s…

The object consists of a hollow sub-conical or 'onion-shaped' butt-end, which tapers into a hollow open-ended cylindrical shaft. At the centre of the outer edge of the butt-end, there is a small circular hole and there is a semi-circular break in the metal which follows a portion of the circumference. A small portion of cylindrical shaft seems to have broken off. It is possible that there is a small groove at the point where both components intersect. There are interior…

Roman iron Pilum this has a long thin shaft, 120 mm long 19mm diameter, this may have had a circular of even rough hexagonal cross section. The head appears to have expanded into a flat leaf shaped blade with a lozenge cross-section, however most of the blade has been truncated with only its base remaining. At the opposite the base of the shaft widen outwards to form a rounded socket, this has been truncated resulting in only the tip of the socket remaining. The pila are divided into two distinctive groups, the heavy which had a round weight added at the junction of the wood and ir…

A wrought iron spearhead of unknown date - most probably Roman (50 -300 AD) but could date from the Roman - Medieval periods (50-1450) The spearhead is irregular in shape being encased within iron corrosion - it has broken into two parts and the metal in section is also laminating - making the piece very fragile. The spearhead is best described as having a slender profile with a slight leaf shaped blade. Due to corrosion it is not possible to say whether the spear has a discernible mid rib as the cross section is too heavily distorted. The blade has a broken and blunted point. The …

A hand forged iron possible pilum (or throwing spear / bolt) of probable Roman date, 50 - 200 AD. The pilum is heavily corroded / encrusted and suffering badly from laminating corrosion. It is sub-rectangular in plan and varies in cross section; the shaft has an irregular oval shaped section that expands to a regular square sectioned head that tapers to a blunt point. Much of the surface has been lost to laminating corrosion and the damage to the shaft is relatively old. The pilum head is best described as being a bolt with no signs of bladed edges or sharpened point. The point itself…

An Incomplete, Roman, Iron spearhead, AD.43-450. Object comprises the blade and part of the socket of the spearhead. The blade is narrow and triangular with a rounded tip. The blade has short gently tapering shoulders to the waist from which the socket emerges. The socket itself is incomplete and there is little diagnostic detail that could be gained from it. The spearhead is a narrow 'diamond' in cross-section across the blade. The surface is heavily corroded and there is significant delamination occurring to the metal. The object has a bend in the blade, this seems to have occurr…
