Fragment of a marble sculpture of uncertain date, possibly Roman. The fragment is roughly oblong, with apparent breaks on all edges and is of inconsistent thickness. The front exhibits a female figure standing left, carved in high relief. The figure has an elaborate hairstyle consisting of a thick plait coiled across the forehead and tapering to the neck. A worked stone of the Roman period, dating from the 2nd-3rd centuries. The stone depicts a probably female head in the Romano-British style, with a head on a neck in relief on a rectangular base. There is no background panel behind the head, with the upper figural portion being sub-triangular in shape with a flat(ish) front face and a gently sloping reverse. Roman limestone carving. The limestone block is roughly rectangular however the sides and back are rough and appear to be damaged. The front of the carving has a different patina to the sides and reverse, being a more weathered grey-brown as opposed to relatively fresh limestone yellow-grey of the breaks. The carving depicts an erect penis with testicles below and vagina above. Similar carvings are known from military and urban sites in Roman Britain and were often made to avert the evil eye. Small stone sculpture of a female goddess nursing an infant (Dea Nutrix). It is complete except the head. The female is draped in dress and cloak and breast-feeding a small child. This suggests the representation of another form of Mother Goddess as a "nursing mother", i.e. Dea Nutrix. The object is a carved stone sculpture of a probable boar or pig. A close comparison has not, so far, been found, therefore the date is not certain. However, Martin Henig has commented in correspondence that he doesn’t see why it is not Roman, and mentions a boar discovered in Bath, Wiltshire (Henig, M. The Art of Roman Britain). The stone the object is carved from is an igneous rock, which has been very weathered. Undated lead alloy foot, 49mm long and 12mm wide. The foot is standing on tip toe and has the toes marked out with incised lines. It is very naturalistic with a rounded ball and heel. The foot has been cut off at a diagonal angle just above the ankle. The style suggests its Roman or post medieval.
