An incomplete copper-alloy artefact, probably a spoon-probe for medical or cosmetic use or a drop handle furniture fitting. The shaft has a central circular cross section with a diameter of 5.22 mm. At one broken end the cross section is sub-rectangular and has a diameter of 3.35 mm. From this point the shaft expands into three sets of three ribs, in between these are four waisted areas. The shaft terminates in a tapered blunt point. A possible parallel for use as a probe can be seen on the PAS database CAM-C35FE8, also a parallel for a furniture handle, IOW-F3…

Copper alloy probe fragment. Cast rectangular-section stem of width 3.5mm with a flattened spatulate end, and with three finely incised longitudinal grooves on both its sides. This decoration extends up to c.25mm from the spatulate end; thereafter, the stem was bent to a tight barley-sugar twist of which two turns now remain, with the grooves continuing. Now bent. An incomplete cast copper-alloy object, possibly the terminal end from a probe or spoon probe of Roman date. It has an incomplete cylindrical shaft that measures 1.97mm in diameter and terminates at one end in old breaks. The complete end has an oval probe that is oval in section and slightly pointed at its outer edge. The entire object has a dark brown patina and measures 24.76mm in length, 4.48mm in width/diameter at probe, and 1.50g in weight. This is probably a probe from a spoon probe of Roman date. It finds parallels in examples from Colchester (Crummy, 1983: nos. 1926-1932) …

A copper alloy Roman probe. The probe is a solid elongated oval-shape expanding from a long circular sectioned shaft. The shaft is not decorated and there is not eveidnce of another head at the opposite end; rather it terminates in a worn point. . It is similar to examples are known from Roman Colchester, see also from Palgrave, Suffolk, SF-7A8873; however it is much plainer that these examples. Probes are thought to have been used for the application of cosmetics, or medicaments, particularly to the eye or ear areas. the object is 18.5mm long and has a maximum width of 4mm.

A fragment of a worn and corroded copper-alloy possible cosmetic probe of Roman date (c.1st-4th century AD). This item is formed of a bent shaft, circular in section, which tapers at one end. On the upper portion, two wide collars are visible, delineated by a clear recessed groove. These are decorated with a series of incised lines, with cross-hatched designs on the first and diagonal lines on the second. It is probable that this pattern of collars continued, as a similar recessed groove is located in front of the first collar where the artefact breaks. This artefact has a broad dark …

Fragment of a copper-alloy artefact, probably a Roman spoon-probe for medical or cosmetic use. The shaft has a circular cross section with a diameter of 2.92mm at one broken end. At this point the shaft has not broken off neatly across the cross section and instead has formed a step across the width of the shaft. 16.17mm from this break is a transverse reel shaped rib that has a diameter of 6.45mm and is 3.16mm thick. Immediately after the rib, a deep groove is followed by a bun-shaped bead of 6.80mm diameter and 5.07mm thick. Past this bead is a groove of 2.32mm and 1.37mm diameter f…

a probable Roman copper alloy probe terminal. It is incomplete due to old breaks, and consists of an oval-shaped terminal and length of shaft, not enough of which survives to determine whether the instrument was part of a double-ended spoon-probe. It measures 39.76mm in surviving length and 5.35mm in width. The shaft is circular in section near the terminal, and flattens out as it tapers towards its broken end. The object weighs 1.73g. Examples of spoon-probes from Colchester are illustrated in Crummy,1983, fig.65.
