An incomplete leaded, copper-alloy object, probably a plumb bob. Probably dating to the Roman period, c.AD 43-410 or possible a post-Roman period. At the head of the bob is lug which is circular in plan and cylindrical in section. The lug is not pierced giving the plumb bob no obvious means of attachment. This suggests it is broken although there is no clear point of break. The lug extends to a inverse conical body. Close to the head of the bob, the body is decorated with a circumferential groove. Closer to the terminal of the body there is another circumferential groove…

An incomplete, corroded cast copper alloy and iron possible plumb bob of possible Roman to Post Medieval date (c. AD 43-1800). The object is conical, being largely triangular in plan with a largely circular cross section. There is a circular collar near the terminal at the top of the object, above of which is an iron protrusion. There is evidence of iron infill throughout the object, with iron corrosion around the object and a fracture running along one side with a sub-triangular bit of the copper alloy shell tearing away at an angle, revealing iron infill There are a n…

A complete lead alloy plumb bob of probable Roman date, c. AD 43-410. It has a sub-conical design with a narrow neck, c. 14.8 mm in diameter and 3.5 mm high, above the conical base before a plano-convex disc, c. 21.5 mm in diameter, above this neck groove. There is a narrow cylindrical aperture in the centre of this disc which extends down to the neck where it links to another cylindrical aperture, perpendiucular to the first one, crossing through the diameter of the neck; this hollow would have been for the attachment of the plumb bob to a suspe…

Copper alloy possible plumb bob. Cast sub-spherical object with a projecting round-collared lug with traces of either its broken continuation [perhaps as a loop] or a very snugly fitted component in its end. A broad medial band appears to have arisen from wear, forming two facets meeting at the midpoint of the sphere. A range of fine and mainly vertical scratches appear on these facets, though they do not continue onto the undamaged curving surfaces above and below the worn zone. Lightly incised marks on the upper half may include the letter W or letters VV next to another broader goug…

A lead weight possibly a plumb bob possibly dating to the Roman period (c.AD 43-410) but may have a later medieval date (1150-1450). At one end of the conical shaped body is a straight neck topped with an overhanging rim. . There is a circular hole through the centre of the object and the opposite and smaller end is knobbed. The patination and level of corrosion to the lead surface would suggest an early date. The Romans used plumb bobs although this artefact does not have a hole through the top to act as as a suspension loop. A groove on the rim suggest that a thread or wire was howe…

A conical coper-alloy Roman object, most likely a plumb bob. It is in mostly complete condition but is missing its lug or loop for suspension. It finds parallels in a plumb bob weight from South Shields (Allason-Jones and Miket, 1984: no. 3.477) as well as a mount recorded through the PAS (LIN-E94F54).

Lead plumb bob. Cast weight for a builders' or surveyors' plumbline. The object is formed like a miniature globular vessel with a narrow neck flared at its rim, though solid. Converging holes of diameter 2.7mm are drilled at the centre of the top and in the side of the neck. Patinated overall with a presumably post-depositional scratch in the side. The find spot is in the vicinity of Ermine Street. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410. Height: 34.1mm, Diameter: 22.7mm, Weight: 70.10gms.

An incomplete copper alloy and lead Roman plumb bob or steelyard weight. It consists of an ovoid, longitudinally ribbed outer copper alloy shell filled with lead. There is a break at one end, perhaps where there was an attachment loop originally. Plumb bobs were suspended from lines and used as surveying tools. Alternatively the object may have functioned as an commercial weight. Two similar solid copper alloy examples from South Shields are illustrated by Allason-Jones (1984, 173, no.475&6). Copper Alloy object probably a plumb bob of the Roman period. The object consists of a long pointed conical body with a concave taper. At the widest end it flutes out steeply to form a platform with a circular band around the head. The band is decorated about its entire circumference with a central segmented, slightly raised, collar, flanked symmetrically by a groove on either side. In the centre of the platform and integral with it, there is the broken stub of a square sectioned shaft. Both the stub and the cone have areas of iron staining on the surface.
