The upper end of the handle is sub shield-shaped with the concave face angled to fit against what would have been the slightly flaring neck of the vessel, just below the rim of the mouth. The oval-sectioned body arches out and tapers down towards a concave inverted tear-shaped terminal for attachment to the expanded body of the vessel. Height 113mm. Width of attachment at lower end 20mm. Weighs 87.94g. Cf. slightly more elaborate handles of similar form in La Vaisselle de Bronze, Romaine et Provinciale, au Musée …

XIII-XX, coins (Sir) George Macdonald, in JRS, II (1912), 1-20, discussed the findspot of the hoard, and concluded that it was found within a building of some kind, probably under the floor. He gave the dimensions of the bronze jug as 6 in. high, 4 3/4 in. in greatest diam. and 1 1/4 in. wide at the mouth. It had one handle. (For jug, cp. A cast, copper-alloy lid from a sheet bronze jug, dating to the late second or third century AD. The lid is approximately 'D' shaped, with a rounded outer edge. The upper surface of the lid is plain. The straighter side is angled upwards in profile to fit against with the vessel's rim. An approximate and angular representation of a duck sits at the centre of the curved outer edge, acting as a thumb rest. The inset tail is broken, leaving a vertical ridge but more complete examples show that this would have been projected into a thinner loop. The lid measures 37mm in length and 41mm…

Cast lead alloy fragment. Possibly a handle escutcheon from a Roman or Post Medieval pewter jug. The fragment has a wide base plate, roughly lozenge shaped with angled sides widening from the top and irregular lower sides. The lower sides are shaped into five lobes with wider lobes at the centre and sides with narrower lobes between them. The indents between the lobes are emphasised by incised lines. The outer lobes are damaged. The front of the plate is slightly convex becoming more convex towards the top corner. From the top corner projects an oval sectioned handle with a broken end…

This copper alloy object is most probably a handle from a rounded, Roman, or later medieval period jug of utilitarian type. The handle is 'L' shaped and there is no evidence of additional decoration. If we consider that this handle has a diagonal measurement of 90mm, we can postulate a rough size of the whole vessel using the guide on the Asmolean Museum web site. Given the details within the site, it would suggest from other examples, a vessel around twice that in height, thus 180mm. If we then use the ashmolean.org – PotWeb - NewBodleian Internal Radius calculations, we ca…

Romano-British handle from a jug, finely cast in the form of a dolphin. The open mouth of the dolphin forms a right-angle that would have abutted and overlapped the rim of the jug, with the D-sectioned body arching out and down towards the twisted tail with concave tear-shaped plate for attachment to the body of the vessel. The dolphin has cast fins and pointed oval eyes with dots for pupils, engraved grooves on the crest and fines scales over the curved surface of the body. The pad-like terminal of the 'tail' is shaped rather like a light bulb (oval with blunt projection at lower edg…
