An incomplete probable Roman copper-alloy hinge dating to circa AD 43-410. The extant piece is broadly rectangular in plan. Along one edge is a hinge mechanism comprised of two cylindrical elements set between a U-shaped median slot which would have socketed the hinge. The body is incomplete, makign the form difficult to determine but it appears to be a broadly rectangular plate of assymetrical width. In the centre is an openwork element which is formed of two crescents, only one of which survives, which may have broadly formed a hear-shape. Positioned above the surviving crescenti is …

An incomplete Roman bone and wood hinge for a box or chest. Description: The hinge is formed of an outer bone cylindrical sheath containing a central wooden spindle with the stump of the peg. The outer bone cylindrical has been turned and polished and decorated with incised lines (two pairs and one single line). There is one neat circular hole drilled into the side. The wooden spindle inside has shrunk slightly due to some drying out. It too has been drilled with a circular hole that still holds the stump of a peg. This corresponds with the hole in the outer bone sheath. This hin…

Each plate is formed by folding a thin sheet metal kept thight by a copper-alloy rivet. The back sheet of each plate is shorter than the front one and it has a sub-rectangular shape in plan. The front sheets are broken in differetn lenghts. The hinge might be part of a laminated body armour or other sorts of strap fittings. Cf. Crummy (1981, p. 134, fig. 152, no. 4221) and Chapman (2005, pl. L, Lc06,Lc37,Lc39). It is not exc…

Cast copper alloy object that appears to be one side of a hinge from a robust item such as chest or other piece of furniture. It is rectangular in plan with rounded edges and a convex front. The front has four concave curved sides leading up to a central flat rectangle. The back is concave with an indented rectangle with angled sides within a less indented border. While the back broadly follows the form of the front it is simplified leaving quite thick areas of cast metal between the two at some points. Attached to the lower edge of one of the shorter sides are two sections of a cylin…
