A cast copper alloy buckle plate of later Roman date (Hawkes and Dunning (1961) type IIB), dating to, c. AD 250 - 400. The plate is rectangular with three rectangular perforations and a rivet hole at each corner. The sides and rear edge have decorative cusped borders. There is a ridge across the front end behind a pierced pin articulation and small bar which retains a copper alloy pin. The integrally cast frame has broken away and been lost.

An incomplete Roman copper-alloy buckle, dating to c.AD 300 - 410. Half of the buckle frame remains. Hawkes and Dunning Type IIA. The remaining fragment is C shaped in plan and semi-circular in section, it is formed of a dolphin with a gaping jaw. A large ring and dot motif forms the eve and a large fin covers the dolphins back. A fragment of a copper alloy buckle plate, possibly of late Roman date and cf. Hawkes and Dunning (1961) type IIB, dating to, c. AD 250 - 400. The openwork integral plate is rectangular and flat with an openwork design comprising parallel rectangular holes, with two incomplete circular holes to the front on the break at the edge, and a a trefoil arrangement of three circular holes at the rear, behind which is a projecting waisted semi-circular terminal. There are no rivets or attachments and no evident decoration.

The head is D-shpaed in cross section (flat back, slightly domed reverse) and shaped in the form of an animal's head with an open mount snout and plume above the head. An incomplete copper alloy buckle tongue from a late Roman buckle of Hawkes and Dunning type II A (Hawkes and Dunning, 1961, 50-52, fig 17e). Such buckle tongues rarely survive. It has a downward curving pin and this projects from a rectangular base with two downward curving projections at its sides which would have interlocked with the loop terminals of the now missing frame. Just over half of a post-medieval double-looped buckle frame, both loops B-shaped, a reduced sized version of Whitehead 2003 no. 441. At either of the bar short engraved lines form the letter V, with the basal angle on the exterior. Rust in the centre of the bar suggests that the pin was of iron. The breaks are not recent. The buckle consists of a D-shaped frame with an elaborate exterior edge, expanded into an openwork depiction of two stylised confronted dolphins. The exterior edge is slightly obliquely angled. The frame is sub-oval in cross section. The patina is blue and this appears to be the action of corrosion. A patch of iron corrosion on the frame may indicate the location of a missing iron pin.
