Ceramic building material. Pale buff oxidised fabric with reddening throughout its thickness on one side, which might arise from reuse in a hearth structure. Brick or tile fragment. A small shard of a thick handmade brick or tile with smoothing or striking off marks on either side. Unlike a medieval tile, the upper and lower sides as they were formed are not readily distinguished. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410 Length: 91.6mm, Thickness: 38mm, Weight: 166.74gms

Ceramic building material. Reduced fabric with very broad oxidised margins. A fragment of brick with smoothing marks on its external face, on the upper side as made, and rougher but probably broken on all other sides. The fabric is similar to that of indubitably Roman tiles presented along with it, but there is also a later, post-medieval, tile included in the group so this could be part of a medieval or post-medieval handmade brick. Suggested date: Probably Roman, 43-410 Length: 68mm, Thickness: 28.5mm, Weight: 70.15gms

A fragment of a coarse ware Roman brick found in the River Ribble dating to the period AD 70- 410. The fragment is rectangular in shape and cross section. The fragment is well oxidized, due to its strong orange colour, but there are exceptions of a reduced black core. The brick is well made with visible grog inclusions. The brick remains undecorated. Very similar to WILT-4429F8 on the database. The length is 145mm, the width is 98mm and the weight is too heavy for scales.

An incomplete Roman ceramic Lydion brick dating from AD 50-410. The remaining fragment constitutes approximately half the original brick, although the exact length is unknown due to the considerable variation in the dimensions of Lydion bricks. The fabric is fully oxidised and red throughout. Dimensions: length: 207mm; width: 260mm; thickness: 31.52mm; weight: 2304g. A similar Lydion brick on the database is LON-BFCB35. An incomplete fragment from the corner of a fired clay brick. It has a soft orange/pink fabric, with gritty and flint inclusions, some of which are quite large, as well as visible small indentations perhaps resultant from now lost organic materials. The fragment is roughly rectangular in form and section and appears handmade. It measures 60.33mm in surviving length, 115.10mm in width, 54.03mm in thickness, and 346g in weight. It is of possible Roman date, but a later date cannot be ruled out entirely.

A fragment of hard building material, most probably plaster or brick. The exterior is pink with some light grey patches on both faces with some ferrous, mica and grit inclusions and voids. The fabric is pink with undulations as if formed by semi-liquid/plastic swirls. It also has one or two medium to large pebble inclusions and voids. The inner face has a medium-sized sub-circular khaki coloured marking, resulting probably from chemical reaction with adjacent, extraneous material. Fractures are irregular. It is dated to between c43 and c410 AD and is moderately abraded. The length …
