An irregular chunk of a dense off-white stone in which crystalline structures appear to run in two distinct planes. These are exposed at either sub-oval end as a mass of platelets set on end, with zones of a contrasting orientation on its sides exhibiting a smoother or finer-grained surface with linear striations, though still sparkling under strong lighting. It is uncertain whether this material may originate from veins in the local chalk geology, or from an imported building stone. The texture of the material appears, however, too friable for any sculptural use. It wa…

Possible Roman iron object, 102mm in length, 32mm wide and 7mm thick with a weight of 23.47grams. The object is T shaped in form and rectangular in cross section. It has two short right angled projections at one end which are seperated by a semi-circlular depression on the outer surface, which continues down the front as a concave shallow recess for 20-30mm. The object is possibly a T-shaped clamp which would have been used in the fixing of a variety of architectural elements, especially box flue-tiles. See NMS-8225A8 Cf. Manning 1985, 131-2, R70-2.

Possibly a piece of petrified wood, but more probably petrified conifer bark. One face shows signs of wear rather than weathering and it is possible that the object may have been used architecturally or culturally during the Roman occupation. Petrified conifer bark does rather suggest other fossilised conifer products, for instance amber. On the other hand its presence near a Roman settlement might well be a complete coincidence.
Measures 37mm in length, 20mm in width, 18mm in thickness and weighs 20.4g.
