A lead biconical steelyard weight of possible Roman date c. AD 43-410. The weight is biconical with two worn iron projections at each end. The lead surface has a grey white patina with a deep linear indentation on the narrow edge.  Dimensions: height: 25.34mm,  width: 23.74mm,  weight: 45.57g. The PAS Guide notes that most common Roman steelyard weights are biconical as in this example, with a separate iron loop attached at one or both apexes.  If there are two loops, one is for suspension and the other holds a hook on which to hang …

A small lead probable spindle whorl of possible Roman date, AD 43 - 410. It is conical with a truncated top and a small central circular perforation of 2.2mm diameter. It fits into Walton Rogers form A2 if it is a whorl, but the size of the central hole may be too small, and the object may be a weight or bead instead. The object is 12.9mm long, 11.9mm wide, 8.8mm thick and weighs 5.62g.  The hole in the centre of the top has a diameter of 2.2mm. Form A2 whorls are most common from AD 700 - 1100, but those with a central hole smaller than 6mm diameter are more likely to b…

A cast lead probable spindle whorl of Walton Rogers form A1 dating from the Roman period, about  AD43 - 410.  It is plano-convex in shape with irregular edges and  a central, circular perforation of internal diameter 3.2mm. The piece is undecorated and has an overall light brown patina. Measurements are; diameter 30.3mm, thickness 5.0mm and weight 21.14g.  The central hole has a diameter of 3.2mm. Walton Rogers suggetss that whorls with a central hole of less than 6mm diameter are more likely to be Roman. She also notes the use of form A1 whorls in Ro…

Lead vessel repair or pot mend, as kindly identified by the finder. Cast oval plug to mend a hole in a vessel wall of thickness 3.7mm, patinated though retaining a dark cast, flat base possibly chipped. The neat finish may point to a Roman date. An incomplete  lead steelyard weight of Roman date (c. AD 43 - 410). Description: The weight is broadly spherical in form with a (possibly deliberately) pitted surface.  A single stub of iron wire protrudes from one apex, and two from the other, probably representing the remains of a loop. An incomplete cast, lead steelyard weight, probably dating to the Roman period (c. AD 43-410). The weight is broadly bi-conical in form with both sections tapering to a rounded point. One section appears slightly truncated; it is possible that this would have been the site of an attachment loop would have been attached. This would probably have been made of iron. Although minimal there is some evidence of iron corrosion on the surface of the weight at one apex.  The surface of the weight is undecorated and is patinated creamy-brown with patches of grey. …

Roman lead steelyard weight. It very approximately bi-conical: it is bulbous around the middle rather than having a defined arris, and it is far from perfectly circular. There is a shallow oval indentation at one end and a double-oval one (a bit like a figure-of-eight) at the other, but no remnant of a loop survives. It has suffered some deep scars, probably due to contact with the plough. 1st to early 5th century. Length (pole to pole): 32.5mm. Diameter: 29.7 – 32.1mm. Weight: 140g.

Lead steelyard weight. A small cast bi-conical weight with a blind hole in one end and a rectangular socket [5mm x 3mm x depth 6mm] in the other, patinated. The form would suggest use with a small version of a steelyard beam; the lack of rust or corrosion staining at the socket from a suspension loop would suggest the latter had been removed before the object was deposited. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410 Diameter: 23.3mm, Height: 20.9mm, Weight: 54.20gms

Incomplete bi-conical lead steelyard weight of Roman date. It is oval in cross-section, 27.4 x 24.5mm at the centre, with one near-complete conical half tapering to a point at which an iron rod emerges and is turned over, probably originally to form a D-shaped loop which is now crushed. Some of this half is missing, with an irregular gouge out of one side. Most of the other half is missing, with a square depression or gouge at the break revealing the corroded iron rod, which originally would have run from one end to the other and be used for suspension. There are hints of a s…

An incomplete cast lead-alloy steelyard weight dating to the Roman period (AD 43-410). The weight is broadly bi-conical and consists of two similarly hemispheres divided by a circumferential ridge. The apex of the upper hemisphere has the remains of an iron attachment fitting consisting of two broken sub-rectangular-sectioned arms that formed a loop. An assemblage of over 100 lead sling-shots we found on farm in St Albans (south-east of the Roman town of Verulamium) and published by Greep (1987: 183-200), who suggested the possible first century date.
