Broad period: ROMAN
County: North Yorkshire

A domed lead spindle whorl of Walton Rogers form A1, probably dating from the Roman period, AD 43 - 410. It has one flat face and one domed face, putting it in Walton Rogers form A1. Most of the surface is msissing, but there are traces of radiating grooves on the domed face. Diameter 22.7mm; inner perforation 5.6mm; thickness 6.7mm and weight 21.58g. The size of th central hole suggests a Roman date (Walton Rogers). While plano-convex whorls are not covered in Gelba's 2008 shape based typology, they are known from sites along the Romano British northern frontier and are menti…

Object type: STEELYARD WEIGHT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published
Roman lead steelyard weight. It very approximately bi-conical: it is bulbous around the middle rather than having a defined arris, and it is far from perfectly circular. There is a shallow oval indentation at one end and a double-oval one (a bit like a figure-of-eight) at the other, but no remnant of a loop survives. It has suffered some deep scars, probably due to contact with the plough. 1st to early 5th century.
Length (pole to pole): 32.5mm. Diameter: 29.7 – 32.1mm. Weight: 140g.

Lead spindle whorl. Cast discoid flat-sided or cylindrical whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 5.6mm, Walton Rogers form B. A groove passes across the hole on one side, and might signal the conversion of whorl to line weight. Patinated. The small size of hole might permit this to receive a Roman or earlier Anglo-Saxon spindle; the neat finish may hint at an earlier date. The mass would permit this to be used to spin a fine yarn. Suggested date: probably Roman, 43-410

A Roman lead steelyard weight, dating to c. AD 43 - 410. The object is large and globular with a flattened base, a subcircular central recess and iron staining. Lead spindle whorl. Small cast plano-convex whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 5.4mm, now partly burred over on the convex side, Walton Rogers form A1. Patinated. The spindle hole size could admit a spindle of Roman or Early Anglo-Saxon date, while the mass would make a primary use spinning a fine yarn possible. The neat finish may hint at a Roman date. Suggested date: Roman to Early Medieval, 43-700

Lead or lead alloy 1 pound steelyard weight with axial remains of an iron suspension insert. The weight is bi-conical with a flattened equator. At the apex of the upper cone, there is the remains of an iron insert, probably a loop or hook for suspension. The iron insert does not protrude through to the opposite side of the weight. The surface of the weight is heavily corroded to a whitish-grey colour, and is very scratched and pockmarked through interaction with the soil. The bi-conical form and iron suspension loop are typically Roman, as is the predomina…

Lead vessel repair or pot mend. A massy poured mend to repair a hole in a vessel wall of thickness 4.9mm; a crumb of pale buff unglazed ceramic remains trapped in the mend. Patinated, with a flap of the lead which ran through the vessel when the lead was poured turned over. The large size and untidy character of this mend would usually prompt its assignment to the medieval period. In this case, however, the soft fabric trapped in the mend seems more likely to be Roman. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410

Lead steelyard weight. A small cast bi-conical weight with a blind hole in one end and a rectangular socket [5mm x 3mm x depth 6mm] in the other, patinated. The form would suggest use with a small version of a steelyard beam; the lack of rust or corrosion staining at the socket from a suspension loop would suggest the latter had been removed before the object was deposited.
