A lead weight possibly of Roman date, perhaps from a steelyard. The weight is ovoid or egg-shaped and has a circular perforation through it from top to bottom (of 4.2mm diameter) which could have housed an iron suspension loop. It has a mass of 32.8g and is 22.2mm long and 17.4mm diameter (aprox 1/10th of a Libra). There is no need for a steelyard weight to conform to a specific weight. Steelyard weights of this form have been found in Roman contexts, but it could also be of later date.

A Roman (AD 43-410) lead anthropomorphic weight in the form of a human face. It is D-shaped in cross-section, being solid and flat to the underside, and ovoid in shape with one rounded end (the top of the head) and one more pointed end (the chin). The convex face has a raised moulded transverse band below the wider end, formed of c. four or five large conjoined pellets. Below are two hollowed oval areas with raised central lentoid eyes. The nose between has been lost through damage but was a central ridge and the highest point of the object. Below this, and just above the more pointed…

A lead alloy steelyard weight, probably dating to the Roman period (AD 43-410). The weight is biconical with two short projections extending at either apex, the remains of a circular iron suspension loop (at top and bottom). The object measures 36.1mm in length with a max.width and diameter at the centre of 27.5mm. It weighs 79.41g. The form is usually considered as Roman, and the beam balance is thought to have been lost in Britain between the end of the Roman period and the later medieval period when it was reintroduced from the continent. The smaller disc is sub-oval in shape with a convex extrenal face; the other is sub-rectangular and flat. A piece of brown-coloured pottery with numerous black-coloured inclusions is visible between the two discs. The object measures max. 34.5x23.6x13.3 mm and weighs 46.8 g. A probably Roman lead votive model or miniature object in the form of an axehead, of possible 2nd to 4th century AD date (I.M.Stead and V.Rigby, 1986, p.136). The object is trapezoidal in plan and triangular in profile, increasing in thickness from the "cutting edge" (13.2x0.9mm) to the "attachment end" (10.3x6.5mm), where there is a vertical shaft hole oval in shape (4.5x2.0mm). The object has been formed by folding a piece of lead back on itself. As a result one face is much thinner and this is apparent around the shaft hole (off-centre) where loss of metal has occurred. A Roman - Post-Medieval (AD 1-1800) hemispherical lead weight or spindle whorl. It stands 6.31mm in height and weighs 22.55g. The base measures 26.60mm in diameter. The central piercing is slightly off-centre and measures 8.11mm (base) and 7.75mm (apex) in diameter. Margeson suggests that the weight of a spindle whorl is suggestive of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30 - 35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, 184).

A lead steelyard weight, probably dating to the Roman period (AD 43-410). The weight is biconical in form, although it is slightly irregular. Both the top and bottom of the weight have depressions where suspension loops may have been, but there are no signs of iron corrosion. It measures 32.26mm in height, 32.04mm in maximum diameter and weighs 124g. The surface is now a light grey/brown colour with numerous scratches and dents. A lead pot repair of probable Roman date (AD 43-410). Overall it measures 40.50mm x 32.75mm x 12.95mm and weighs 56.93g. It comprises of a worn potsherd from the side of a vessel and two sheets of lead of a similar size. The potsherd is 2.75mm thick and is curved. The lead sheet on the concave side is 2.25mm thick while the lead on the convex side varies from c.4mm to c.7mm thick. The potsherd comes from the body of a vessel made with a red fabric which has no visible inclusions and is therefore probably fine ware (hence the probable Roman date).

A probable cast lead pot mend, used to mend a broken vessel in order to lengthen the period of use after damage had occurred. One section is broadly sub-oval and flat in profile, with the section to the other side of the slot pyramidal. There are no discernible pottery fragments within the slot. The repair has corroded to an off-white colour. Unfortunately such repairs are not diagnostic; however, a tentative Roman date is offered given finds made in the vicinity.

A cast lead pot mend to repair a base, used to mend a Roman Central Gaulish black-slipped ware vessel dating to the late 2nd-century in order to lengthen the period of use after damage had occurred. It is broadly sub-oval in plan with a broadly flat base. The central section of the base has a concave recess. Three fragments of a Central Gaulish black-slipped ware rim or base are visible (the largest fragment is 28.7mm in length and 9.25mm high). A corroded cast lead object - possibly a 'homemade' Roman weight. The object is broadly teardrop shaped with a rounded end. It tapers towards the other end which features a crude transverse groove, possibly for suspension. One surface is domed while the other is flat; the object has a semicircular cross-section. The surface is now a light-grey/white colour with numerous scratches and dents. This object's current mass bears no clear relationship to the Roman weight-system, but was found in the vicinity of Roman steelyard weights.

A corroded and abraded cast lead object - probably a Roman steelyard weight. The object is broadly circular in plan with a large, corroded iron loop (L.: 23.3mm) off centre on its upper surface. The weight tapers to a broadly oval base (33.2 by 25.7mm); the sides taper to the short ends, while the long sides have been squashed. The base is flat enough for the weight to stand. The surface is now a light-grey/white colour with numerous scratches, dents and areas of cracking. Given its current mass it is unclear how this weight fits into the Roman weight-system.
