An incomplete cast lead-alloy steelyard weight dating to the Roman period (AD 43-410). The weight is broadly bi-conical and consists of two similarly hemispheres divided by a circumferential ridge. The apex of the upper hemisphere has the remains of an iron attachment fitting consisting of two broken sub-rectangular-sectioned arms that formed a loop. The base of the attachment is visible at the opposite end of the weight in the form of a flattened bar. The surfaces of the weight are very worn and abraded with widespread pitting and scratching. The patination is light grey …

An incomplete Roman to Early Medieval cast lead spindle whorl, of Walton Rogers type A1, dating c. AD 43-1000. The spindle whorl is rounded conical in shape with one rounded face, tapering rounded sides and a circular perforation through the centre. The diameter of the perforation is 6mm diameter. The other face is damaged and now concave but was once probably flat or only slightly recessed. A circumferential groove partially extends around the outer edge on this face. The entire object is very worn and abraded. The patina is mottled light and dark grey and brown. The spind…

The shaft of the attachment loop extends through the body to the opposite end of the body, where it has been flattened to secure it in place. The lower section of the body is hemispherical. Both the upper and lower sections are uneven in shape and are divided by an uneven raised circumferential ridge. The surfaces of the body are heavily worn and abraded. The patina is mottled light gr…

The weight is roughly bi-conical in form consisting of two equally sized upper and lower hemispheres with a pronounced circumferential ridge between them. At the top of the weight are two circular-sectioned stems (a total of 11mm wide and each approximately 4mm diameter) of an iron attachment loop. At the base of the weight is another broken circular-sectioned iron stem (2.8mm diameter). The surfaces of the weight are undecorated and very worn and abraded, with widespread scratching. A fragment of cast lead mirror frame dating to the Roman period. The fragment consists of the corner of a square or rectangular frame that is roughly L-shaped and convex in shape. The slightly rounded edges of the frame are raised and descend to a recessed base consisting of a flat section cut by a semi-circular recess. The edges of the frame are decorated with a double parallel line and a boarder of incised notches, similar examples of which are known on other Roman rectangular mirrors (see Lloyd-Morgan 1981, p. 3). A probably Roman lead steelyard weight, dating AD 43-410. The object is roughly spherical, with an iron suspension loop cast into the top. The iron loop is so corroded the opening is no longer visible. The weight has a mid-light grey pattina with adark reddish-brown disolouration around the iron loop. Similar weights have been recorded on the PAS database, cf. SF-F6878E with several other published examples. However due to their undiagnostic nature, it is difficult to know for certain whether these weights are exclusively Roman in date, as similar examples are found well into the …

A lead steelyard weight, probably dating from the Roman period. The damaged artefact is biconical, one side being slightly longer than the other. Protruding from either end is a pair of corroded iron spikes, representing the remains of the loop. The object measures 31.4mm long and up to 24.4mm wide. At 75.34g, it seems likely that this represents a three unciae weight, the full weight of the Roman quarter libra (pound) being 81.9g.

A cast lead sling-shot of Roman date. The artefact is biconical, tapering to a sharp point at one end and a more rounded point at the other. The surfaces are convex, with a slight flattening on either side, and are heavily corroded. The dimensions were not recorded. An assemblage of over 100 lead sling-shots, found at the same farm as this piece (a short distance to the south-east of the Roman town of Verulamium), is discussed by Greep (1987: 183-200), who suggests a mid 1st century date, based on associated early military equipment (ibid: 184). A cast lead steelyard weight of probable Roman date. The biconical weight is incomplete, missing parts of its surface and also most of its inserted iron loop. Unusually, a series of iron nails have been inserted into the surface. One half bears a ring of five such nails, the other side having four. The purpose of these nails is unclear. It is possible that they were added to provide extra weight; the regularity of their placement does, however, suggest a probable decorative function. The object measures 35.7mm high and 35.6mm wide. The weight of 106.37g is just short of four Roman u…

Cast lead weight, possibly a plumb bob, of uncertain date. The body of the weight is cylindrical in form with a cone shaped terminal at one end and a hole drilled into the opposite end possibly for suspending the weight on the end of a string or line. A slight blob on the end of the cone shaped end may be the remains of a casting sprue, The weight has pale yellow grey corrosion over most of its surface with hints of the grey metal visible in places beneath.Possible parallels on the PAS database include a very similar example from Arlington, East Sussex (SUSS-354963) It is 33…
