Object type: SEAL
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A Roman lead alloy seal dating to the 4th century AD. This seal is struck on one side with an impression of an obverse coin die, most likely of a nummus and around 18mm in diameter. This depicts a bust, right, with a now illegible legend around and is likely of the House Constantine (AD 306-363). The reverse of the object is convex with a channel running through the midline of the object which retains corroded iron remnants of a wire which secured the seal.

Object type: STEELYARD WEIGHT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Surrey
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cylindrical cast lead alloy steelyard weight. The upper surface has a stump of an iron suspension loop. The lower surface has the rusted heads of three nails or pieces of iron which have been cast directly into it, most likely in order to adjust the weight which is now 466.49g (approximately 1.5 Roman libra (pounds)). This parity suggests a Roman date for the object.

A cast lead spindle whorl of lines and pellets design. possibly Walton Type C. probably medieval.
The object is bi-conical and carinated, (has a ridge around the circumference). both faces are convex.
It is worn but appears to have a moulded relief pellet and line design.
The patina is cream.
Walton Rogers suggested a change in design over time: the post-11th-century whorls became rounder in shape with no flat faces, and were either globular, spherical, or rounded bi-conical known as Type/Form C. However Standley suggests a period of the 13th to 15th century for this…

Object type: STEELYARD WEIGHT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Rutland
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete Roman copper-alloy and lead-alloy steelyard weight, dating to c.AD 43 - 410. The mount is in the form of an acorn. The weight has a lead-alloy core and outer copper-alloy casing, the nut, or lower half casing is missing. The cup of the nut remains, it appears undecorated and has a circular hole at the top to house the now missing suspension loop.
Height: 20.3 mm
Diameter: 22.5 mm
Weight: 44.95 g
Philip Smither comments: Given some loss of material, particularly the copper-alloy casing, the mass was probably 2 uncia (c.54.9g). Acorn steelyard weights are often…

County: Leicestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A Roman lead-alloy steelyard weight, dating to AD 43 - 410. The weight is biconical with an incomplete iron loop at the apex of the upper half, some iron corrosion is present on both surfaces.
Height: 44.67 mm
Diameter: 49.62 mm
Weight: 525 g
Philip Smither comments: The steelyard conforms to a mass of c. 19 uncia based on an uncia of 27.45g, which is an odd mass. It conforms to 1.5 pounds. (18 uncia) at a mass of 29.1g. It is likely that the Roman weight varied and outside of large centres was unregulated.

An incomplete cast lead-alloy steelyard weight dating to the Roman period (AD 43-410).
The weight is roughly bi-conical in form consisting of two shallow, very corroded, upper and lower hemispheres that meet at a rounded circumferential ridge. Both of the hemispheres are damaged, one so much so that only a small portion of it remains. At the apex of one of the hemispheres are the square-sectioned remains of an iron shank (approximately 5.1 mm by 5.1mm) that formed one end of an attachment loop. The other end of this is visible through the centre of the broken hemisphere.
