A pot mend of uncertain Roman to Post-Medieval date c. AD 43-1900.  The mend is formed from a thick uneven face/body with slight projecting stem/integral rivet roughly in the middle. The other side has a much small face/body which is also quite irregular. The two faces together with the shank creates a roughly circular group which would have allowed the repaired objects fragments to be placed in between them and the lead folded flat to seal it all together. the lead is an off white colour. This is a lead alloy seal matrix that has an oval plate. On the reverse is a rectangular rearwardly projecting plate (14mm wide, 10mm high and 4mm deep). That has a circular hollow on the top right edge, this is probably forming the top of a shaft that would ring the height of the projection, unfortunately the lower edge is encrusted in mud which covers any exit of the shaft, although a small circular depression is viable on the lower edge that would correspond with the upper hollow.  This shaft may have held a binding cord or wire. On the face of the seal is a re…

A lead alloy steelyard weight with the iron attachment loop still in place. It is conical, approximately 40mm diameter at the base. The base is hollow for a depth of approximately 5mm. It has an even light brown patina. A very similar example is NLM-CBCF5D, where the hollow base is attributed to the moulding technique, that is being cast in an open mound. Also see examples such as YORYM-4A0759, these are dated to the Roman period. Dimensions: 40mm diameter at the base and 50mm high overall, it weighs over 200g

Broad period: ROMAN
County: Isle of Wight

Complete Roman - Early Medieval lead alloy probable steelyard weight, c.AD 43-410. A cast conical lead weight with small hole through its centre. It is possible that the body of the weight was either cast in two stages or cast in an open mould. The sides are uneven and slightly damaged, either through use or deposition. A tall plano-convex form might appear on a Roman steelyard weight where the iron hook was withdrawn before deposition - there is no trace of rust staining. This weight is undecorated and has no maker's mark.
