A Roman lead-alloy mount, dating to c.AD 50 - 300. The mount is in the form of a bird, possibly a raven, both the legs are incomplete and the tail is missing. The bird is stylised and is designed to stand upright with its wings part folded to its body; this would have formed a triangular platform on the back of the bird with the wings meeting on top of the tail, however the tip of the tail and edge of the wings are missing. The neck and head are outstretched and terminate in an open beak holding an object, possibly a globe or seed. The mount has been decorated with incis…

A lead-alloy, lozengiform sheet with a central perforated incised single ring-and-dot (2.51 mm diameter). The mount is complete, with a length of 26.18 mm, a width of 23.51 mm, a thickness of 1.65 mm and a weight of 0.80g. This item resembles a Romano-British belt mount or harness mount, albeit without the central hollow-backed boss (see PAS no. The nose is raised and ovoid in shape, tapering toward the top. There is moulded relief on the forehead in the shape of an inverted triangular diadem or helmet with a decorative pellet in the centre. The back of the mount is concave, and there is on…

A cast lead alloy mount - most probably a vessel escutcheon of Roman date AD 100-350) The mount is cast in one piece and augmented with craved / incised / scratched line decoration. It is irregular in plan and D shaped (almost triangular) in cross section. The reverse face is fairly flat ; it does however have a series of depressions on the reverse but no evidence of mounting features. The front face is cast and the design is that of a female bust / head and shoulder. The face has a prominent nose and deeply cut almond - pointed oval shaped eyes; the mouth is indistinct . The neck is…

A Roman lead alloy lion head mount, dating 1st-2nd century AD. The mount is circular with the relief design of a lion's head, including mane, on one side. On the other side are two linear incisions, one running the full length of the mount and another smaller incision that cuts across the larger line in the centre. This is probably where the mount attached to the object it was associated with. The object has a light grey pattination. Dimensions: diameter: 28.18 mm; thickness: 10.63 mm; weight: 32.94g.

A complete (although slightly damaged) lead alloy (pewter) mount dating to the Roman period. The mount is circular in plan and flat with an integrally cast spike or prong on the reverse. This prong would have secured the mount to a strap or piece of leaterh or the like. The mount is decorated with raised concentric rings and outer plain border; the centre of the middle ring is recessed. The concentric rings form four panel however as no enamelling survives it is uncertain whether this mount was decorated in any other manner. Unusually the mount is made from a lead alloy (probably pewt…

A cast lead zoomorphic figurine of unknown date. The object is in the shape of a dolphin with an arched back, a well defined lip and tail. The remains of a casting seam is visible on the base. The base also has the remains of two attachment points which probably fitted the figure to a stand or mount in an upright position. The moulded lead retains some detail on the tail, eyes and mouth. The lead has a mid yellowish-grey patina. The date of the object is unknown and could be Roman to modern in date. There is currently still a degree of debate over the dating and functionality of th…

A lead alloy mount, possibly Roman AD43-410, This mount has been cast to form a crouched male figure in high relief, the reverse of the mount is flat. The lower arms and hands of the figure are missing. The crouched legs terminate in very small, curved feet, possibly representing a tail suggesting this may be a merman, possibly representing Neptune. The figure is nude except for a scallop shell covering groin. The figure has curling hair and a very prominent moustache and beard. The nose is flattened, possibly by wear. There is a broken loop projecting from the apex of the head…

A cast lead alloy mount in the form of a stylised fish or dolphin. The dolphin has an arched back, with the slightly forked tail bending round to meet the back. The head is flattened with a rounded knop projecting from it. Another rounded knop projects from the curve of the tail. It is possible that these formed an attachment area to another object. On each side of the head is a circular depression forming an eye. Each side of the object is decorated with semi-circular incisions which represent fish-scales. The form of the object is very similar to Roman depictions of the dolphin. It …

Cast lead alloy figurine of later Roman date 260 - 350 AD. The figurine is likely to be the terminal fitting of either a staff or more likely a mount from a vehicle. It is incomplete and irregular in plan and profile; being broadly shaped as a male torso (bust) and head depicted in three dimensions. The two arms project, one from either side; both are broken and incomplete. The depiction of the figure is non- anatomical; in that the head is outsized in comparison to the body, being both elongated and enlarged. The figurine is also decorated with both cast and incised decoration. The …

Undated lead alloy head shaped mount, 38mm long and 27 mm wide. The object portrays a male head in the classical stlye but this has been very worn through use. It has a rectangular cut away on the reverse of the head and inside appears to be some sort of encrusted loop or lip. This is covered in iron staining along its right side which continues through to the front of the 'neck' of the object. It has clearly been fixed on something but its age is difficult to determine.

Roman or Post Medieval lead alloy mount, 50mm long and 34mm wide. The object is a 3D representation of a Roman style dolphin. The dolphin has a very prominant upturned 'beak' and its body curves round to form a semi-circle. Its tail is turned back on itself and sits above its body. It has a rounded 'peg' below its head and the upwarding curving tail which would have held it in place. If Post Medieval it may have belonged to a Tobacco jar lid.
