Just over a quarter of an elaborate harness fitting or similar, pierced through the centreline for a vertical bar (now missing) of iron, the rusty remnants partially obscure the top perforation. This end is depicted as a three-faced anthropomorphic three-dimensional head, each cojoined face shares an eye with the adjacent head so there are three eyes in total. Below this there is semi-circular bar in the form of a stylised dolphin, apparently biting the side of the faces, one remains extant, the opposing bar is broken but the stub remains with a trace of the other dolphin’s mouth…

Incomplete Roman copper-alloy strap-mounted and skirted terret ring. Only a short section of the harness guide-loop is extant, but the skirt and the attachment loop beneath it are complete. The guide-loop, as far as it survives, is bi-convex in cross-section. The skirt is lozengiform and has a small projecting rounded knop at two opposing corners. These corners are at the centre of two halves of the skirt which are angled downward. The ridge between the two halves is straight and the guide-loop sits upon it, oriented longitudinally. The attachment loop is circular-cross-section. It pro…

Incomplete Roman copper alloy strap-mounted and skirted terret with all of the ring missing, leaving a hole in the centre of the four-leaved skirt. The pointed oval leaves alternate in two forms, wide with a median arris and a rounded horizontal knob, and narrow with a similarly shaped but upswept terminal knob. One of both forms remains complete, the other two having lost their knobs (old breaks). Between the upper end of each leaf there is a blind drilled hole near the four corners of the rectangular base from which the ring once sprung . On the undersid…

Roman military rectangular harness or strap fitting, copper alloy with millefiori inlay. At one narrow end an integral pair of hollow tubes would have held a spindle and have been hinged with another element such as a toggle clasp, cf. Nicolay 2007, pl. 54 no. 92.99, rather than with a buckle frame (cf. NLM4646). On the reverse are two integral rivets allowing a gap of 4 - 5mm for the thickness of a strap. Three elongated rectangular cells, on the front within an area raised above the sides and one end, were filled with squares of millefiore, eight in each. The glass is badly decayed …

Complete copper-alloy dropped-bar terret of early Roman date, c. 50-150 AD (Lewis 2015, 76, 84, fig. 4.1 xix). It consists of a main ring and an attachment loop, with a small knob at the apex of the main ring. The main ring is oval both externally and internally, and is oval in cross-section. It is bottom-heavy, so is wider and thicker in cross-section towards the base (the junction with the attachment loop). It has a maximum thickness of 11mm at the base but is 8mm thick at the top; the internal dimensions are 17 x 14mm and it is 34mm wide externally. At the top it has a ci…

Fragment of a Roman copper-alloy terret. About 40 per cent of the ring survives, which is a flat in cross-section and terminates in worn breaks. This is surmounted by a sub-rectangular loop, which is filled in with iron corrosion. The piece has a dark brown patina, but has lost a lot of it's surface due to corrosion, revealing a dark green patina underneath. Terrets were used in paired draught to guide the reins from the horse's mouths to the hands of the driver. In total, five terrets form a complete set. All five were placed along the yoke, with the central terret being larger than …
