Copper alloy awl. A cast square-section bar, flattened to a wedge shape at one end, and tapered to a point at the other. This probably served as a double-ended implement, as the ‘blunt’ end would promote the splitting of a handle were it inserted into one; against this suggestion, there appear to be lightly incised lines near the midpoint of the shaft which might approximate to the lower end of a socketed handle. Such a tool would be especially apt to the working of leather. Suggested date: possibly Roman, 43-410 Length: 51.4mm, Width: 4mm, Thickness: 2.9mm, Weight: 2.34gms

Copper alloy probable chatelaine fragment. A cast miniature spoon with a round lightly concavo-convex bowl and a papered stem which is flattened at its upper end to form a drilled loop set at right angles to the plane of the spoon bowl. A spot of gilding appears; this might equally be a feature of a harness pendant of medieval date. The finder kindly suggests this to be from a chatelaine group of suspended cosmetic items, a suggestion followed here. Suggested date: probably Roman, 43-410 Length: 34.6mm, Width (bowl): 13.9mm, Thickness (stem): 3.4mm, Weight: 2.59gms

Copper alloy brooch. Cast hinged Colchester derivative brooch, Mackreth type CD H 4.b. A cylindrical case with a single moulding at its ends is clenched behind to retain an axis bar for a hinged pin [now lost]. The wings are clasped by a D-section bow with a longitudinal ridge or step along either side. The front of the bow is decorated with angled and crossing cuts framed by incised horizontal lines; this might be deemed apt to key enamel though no trace of colorant appears. The bow tapers towards the foot, which is lost along with any trace of a catch plate. Suggested date: Early Rom…

Lead pot mend. A large cast plug to mend a hole in a vessel wall of thickness 4mm. The inner side of the plug [as poured] bears a scratched graffito resembling a kite, with a central cross for struts. Copper alloy possible surgical implement. A cast square section tapered shank, bent sharply [?by plough strike?] at its broader end, and expanded very slightly at its flattened tip, which forms a round-ended spatulate blade. This resembles a post-medieval nail fragment, but the terminal would not have survived use as such and is so neatly formed as to suggest deliberate manufacture in this form; there is also a fine dark patina overall - except at the broken end.
