Copper alloy brooch. Small cast headstud brooch, Mackreth type Headstud 5.a. Short wings probably concealed a tubular case for an axis bar and pin which was clenched behind, and are surmounted by the stubs of an integrally cast top loop. A sub-rectangular section bow, slightly hollowed below the top, meets the wings, and has an integral stud set on the sharp change in its angle. Below the stud there are three small square cells apt to receive enamel; the lower bow is bent inwards and the foot lost. Copper alloy brooch. An unusual form, probably a Colchester derivative rear hook fastening brooch of Mackreth type CD RH 3.k whose spring has been replaced by a cased copper alloy axis bar for a hinged pin [the latter lost]. The original semi-circular wings, hollow behind, now retain a separate narrow [5.7mm] copper alloy cylinder with a wire bar [diameter1.9mm] within it. The stub of the rearward facing hook which would have retained the original spring remains. Copper alloy mount. Cast markedly concavo-convex hollow mask in the form of a maned lion’s head. The nose and jowls are naturalistically rendered, the eyes are represented by protruding oval panels and an oval aperture – whether arising from mis-casting, damage or design – is an open oval hole. The former option is perhaps most likely as another gap appears at the top of the head. An outwardly bevelled rim represents the mane. Possibly from furniture or from a container used to contain a cremation. The lion was persistently linked with death in the Mediterranean world…

Copper alloy and iron brooch. Hinged Colchester derivative brooch, Mackreth type CD H 5.?a. Plain cylindrical wings with a horizontally moulded rib behind retain an iron axis bar for a cast hinged pin which retains extensive gilding traces. The wings are clasped by a humped bow of rounded section with a flat front bearing a central ridge flanked by thin gutters. The bow tapers to a plain foot with a flattened catch plate with a single drilled hole behind it.
