Copper alloy strap end. Cast pendant, possibly from a military apron, with a collared ball terminal, a slightly expanded straight stem and a basal globular concavo-convex expansion with flat base or foot ring. A rivet of diameter 1.4mm and length 5mm passes through the ball terminal, which has a slightly phallic appearance. Copper alloy possible strap end fragment. Cast rhomboid tip from a longer object, with a drilled aperture of diameter 4mm with a low rim around it on the display side. A casually distributed ring of pits surrounds the aperture. A collar of one or two orders is set above the hole, and the object has broken at this site. This may be related to the series of ‘amphora-shaped’ strap ends associated with the later Roman Army. Suggested date: Late Roman, 200-410 Length: 25.7mm, Width: 16.1mm, Thickness: 3.0mm, Weight: 4.68gms

Copper alloy strap end. Cast straight-sided plate with a slightly narrowed outer end or terminal; broken across a rivet hole at its inner end. A stamped and possibly doubled ring and dot of diameter 4.9mm appears at the terminal, and five smaller ring and dot of diameter 2.4mm appear in an otherwise plain field behind it. Horizontally moulded ribs appear at the terminal, where they are over-stamped by the large ring and dot, and towards the inner end, where they were interrupted only by the rivet. The use of two sizes of ring and dot might point to the later Roman or Early Anglo-Saxon…

Copper alloy possible strap end or 'apron mount'. Solid cast object of a form resembling a truncheon; the surface is now black though yellow metal shows beneath this. An expanded end bears three deeply incised and possibly turned grooves and a series of indentations on its rounded end. The narrower end bears a single incised line resembling a collar; the object is possibly broken here and the suggested identification envisages the loss of a suspension loop from this end. A limited longitudinal zone of heavy wear has flattened both the expanded end and the opposite end. Suggested date:…

Copper alloy possible strap end. Cast apron pendant with bulbous pointed knop terminal, tapering sharply towards an expanded stepped collar below a rectangular tab with a drilled suspension hole of diameter 3.5mm. This might be from a post-medieval drawer handle, but the sharp definition of moulded details tends to distinguish this from such objects. Suggested date: possibly Roman, 100-300. Length: 42mm, Diameter: 13mm, Weight: 11.87gms.

Copper alloy strap end; the finder suggests this to be a plumb bob though the object is rather small and light to serve this function, and an origin at the end of a soldier's apron strap is more likely. Cast teardrop shaped object with a small collared and flared foot, a bulbous body with circumferential lines, possibly lathe turned, and a collared oval apical loop with drilled aperture. Suggested date: Roman, 100-300. Height: 31.9mm, Diameter: 12.2mm, Weight: 12.27gms.

Copper alloy strap end or 'apron mount'. Cast pendant with bulbous acorn-shaped terminal with a cylindrical stalk with a basal dimple. Above the acorn, a round section shank of diameter 4.5mm is expanded and flattened towards a curved end with a drilled countersunk aperture of diameter 2.5mm (hole) - 4mm (overall). The lower part of the object retains a black coating. Suggested date: Roman, 100-300. Length: 42.9mm, Diameter (acorn): 14.1mm, Width (at aperture): 7.7mm, Weight: 12.39gms.

Copper alloy and lead strap end. Composite strap end comprising two layers of copper alloy sheet and an internal weight of lead. The outer layer is a folded rectangular strip of sheet 0.7mm thick, 9mm wide and circa 60mm long to begin with. This was folded around a shorter and narrower piece of sheet of thickness circa 1.4mm, width 4mm and estimated length circa 36mm, with one long edge of both pieces aligned. The two layers were forcefully crimped together, and lead was poured from the side where the uneven widths of inner and outer sheets left a gap, filling the triangular space whe…

Copper alloy Strap End fragment. Flat bifurcated cast strap end decorated with closely spaced stamped double ring and dot of diameter 6.4mm. The pointed terminal bears chip-carved notching at both its edges. The use of broad belts was restricted to soldiers and administrators under the later Empire, while both ring and dot and chip carved decoration are linked to a Germanic presence. The object is broken at both ends. Suggested date: Late Roman, 300-400. Length: 28.7mm, Height: 26.9mm, Thickness: 1.9mm, Weight: 3.77gms.

An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman amphora shaped strap end. The amphora shaped plate is slightly convex and has a leaf shaped body, which terminates with a slightly pointed knop. On the upper part of the body are four equally sized circular holes in a quatrefoil formation, which are made to look like ‘handles’. Above the holes is a truncated hinge mechanism, though only fragments of the two integral lugs are remaining. The strap end is decorated with punched dots that go around and in between the four holes and around the edge and centre of the body. The back of the plate is pl…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Late Roman amphora-shaped strap end. The slightly curved undecorated leaf-shaped body narrows from the neck that has two kidney shaped holes suggesting amphora handles. The terminal of the body is now missing. At the top of the strap end are two integral perforated lugs representing a hinge type attachment. Through the centre of these are the remains of an iron pin. The surviving length is 54.1mm, the width is 18.8mm, the thickness of the body is 1.9mm and the thickness of the lugs is 7.7mm.
