Pottery strainer fragment. Greyware: pale grey sandy fabric, with a very slightly darker core; basal angle from a flat-bottomed wide bodied strainer. The sherd bears signs of six holes of diameter 3.5mm which have been pierced from the inner side while the pot was green or unfired, three of which are complete. The finder kindly suggests the holes were made with a quill. The vessel was of estimated basal diameter c.80mm. The form is especially apt to cheese making, where holes permit liquid whey to escape leaving the firmer curd behind, though it may also have served for brewing or oth…

Copper alloy strainer. Cast near semi-circular plate with a raised curving rim of height 6.7mm and with a thinner [4.4mm] flanged straight side. These enclose a thinner [c.2mm] plate with multiple piercings. These are mostly of hour-glass form which may imply drilling from both sides, or possibly drilled finishing of an imperfectly cast object. The curved edge bears incised decoration comprising paired vertical lines and single diagonal lines in alternation. This strongly defined motif may have enhanced the secure lodgement of the object in the spout of a large vessel. The heavy casti…

Pottery possible strainer base fragment. Greyware. Abraded sherd retaining twenty round apertures of diameter 3.5mm, probably from a cheese press or related utensil. The holes do not all - so far as may be seen without aggressive investigation - carry through the sherd. This sherd was kindly identified by Helen Fry, Sandra Firth and Hazel West of the North Lincolnshire Pottery Research Group. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410. Weight: 12.30gms
