Lead steelyard weight. Cast sub-conical [there is an inswing towards the top of the object when it is viewed in profile] weight with an iron bar, presumably the relict of a suspension loop, passing vertically through its centre. Fabric at the flat top is beaten over, perhaps correcting lipping after casting in an open mould. Lightly patinated. These common objects may relate to an official regime of exaction or taxation, and indeed the use of lead dated to Roman times seems persistently linked to official functions, or to those sites of high status which are thought to have been involv…

Lead probable steelyard weight. Cast conical lead weight with small apical hole and a larger hole in its base. It is just possible that the body of the weight was cast in two stages, and probable that it was cast in an open mould, inferences from the appearance of the base with shrinkage lines and/or a discernible separation between two putative stages of manufacture. A tall plano-convex form might appear on a Roman steelyard weight whence the iron hook was withdrawn before deposition - hence there is no trace of rust staining. Dave Haldenby kindly notes that this weight could be con…

Lead steelyard weight. Cast biconical lead weight with two holes in its top from the removal of a separate iron suspension loop, though a spot of iron also appears on the lower part. Five cuts appear randomly distributed across the surface, subsequently patinated. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410 Height: 36.4mm, Diameter: 45.4mm, Weight: c.350gms

Lead possible steelyard weight. Cast conical or plano-convex weight with an off-centre aperture of diameter 6.4mm in its flat side, emerging as a basal hole of diameter 4.8mm. The sides are bubbled and irregular suggesting heat damage or inept casting; shrinkage lines in the upper flat side may suggest this was made in an open mould. If an iron hook had been fitted, it was withdrawn before the object was deposited as there is no trace of rust staining. Suggested date: possibly Roman, 43-410 Diameter: 29.1mm, Height: 20.3mm, Weight: 77.72gms

Lead possible steelyard weight. Cast globular weight with a central moulded hole of probably rectangular form, patinated. This object might be taken for a biconvex whorl were the central aperture not rectilinear in its form; it is also too heavy. It is considered this may be a small steelyard weight whence a separate iron hook has been withdrawn in antiquity, before its rusting could leave any staining. There is a suspicion of open cross-hatching on the body of the object, perhaps masked by chewing, as by a small child or vermin. Suggested date: possibly Roman, 43-410 Diameter: 29.3mm…

Lead and iron possible steelyard weight fragment. A thick flat-sided fragment of cast lead with two moulded straight edges meeting at a corner, with the object broken to reveal an embedded iron hook of thickness 7mm with a U-shaped end continuing into the lead. At its edge, two layers of lead appear, so the hook may have been sandwiched between superimposed layers or within a folded lead sheet. The lead is patinated and the iron rusted. This configuration recalls the construction of Roman steelyard weights, and this may be part of one, albeit of aberrant and probably homemade form. It …

Lead possible steelyard weight, as kindly suggested by the finder. Cast elongated plano-convex weight with a central moulded tapered aperture of maximum diameter 8mm, possibly where a separate iron loop has been withdrawn. The edge of the hole is lined with white fixative and the same material appears on the dented base of the object. Shrinkage lines round the hole may suggest the object was cast in an open mould. Lead steelyard weight. A small cast bi-conical weight with a blind hole in one end and a rectangular socket [5mm x 3mm x depth 6mm] in the other, patinated. The form would suggest use with a small version of a steelyard beam; the lack of rust or corrosion staining at the socket from a suspension loop would suggest the latter had been removed before the object was deposited. Lead steelyard weight, as kindly identified by the finder. The sad relict of a biconical cast lead weight, fiercely abraded, with the entire loss of its upper part which has perhaps carried away the usual iron suspension loop. Lead and iron steelyard weight. Cast cylindrical or globular lead weight with an iron loop projecting from one side, and with two ends of iron wire projecting from the other. The lead is atypically crazed, patinated and degraded, while the iron of the loop is in such good condition – even perhaps retaining some tensile strength – as to cast doubt on the suggested and conventional dating. This might arise from the recent disturbance from a sealed context of an object which had been battered in antiquity. Also grazed at the time of its discovery. Suggested date: possibly Roman, 43-4…

Lead and iron steelyard weight. A small cast globular lead weight with an iron rod passing through it, presumably as the relict of a separate loop; a spot of iron visible on the side of the weight as well as on its base might hint at a more complex form for the ferrous metal component.
