Copper alloy seal box lid fragment Of Andrews (2012), Circular C1, with concentric circles, D2. Cast circular lid with three concentric cells on its display side, the innermost retaining a ring of mid blue enamel with a central reserved dot, and with a flanged underside which would engage a box of matching form. A small knop would facilitate opening the box; broken opposite this, probably at the site of a hinge. Suggested date: Early Roman, 100-200 Diameter: 20mm, Length (as found): 23.9mm, Thickness (clear of flange): 1.3mm, Weight: 2.31gms

Copper alloy seal box lid. Cast rhomboid plate with its edges turned down to form a close-fitting lid for a wax seal box. A round knop at one end and a flattened lug at the other represent a finger-friendly aid to opening and the site of a hinge respectively. The top bears a rectilinear grid or lattice of small rhomboid cells apt to receive enamel, though no trace of colorant now remains. Lightly bent. Suggested date: Early Roman, 100-200 Length: 30.9mm, Width: 20mm, Height (i.e. protrusion): 3.4mm, Thickness (wall, at edge): 0.8mm, Weight: 3.64gms

Copper alloy seal box fragment of Andrews 2012, S3D5 type. Cast sub-rectangular box fragment with rounded corners, with most of two sides remaining and with a lug at one end where one of the other sides is lost. The top of the box bears three overlapping curvilinear oval figures, one larger than the others. Two spots of bright orange enamel occupy small cells formed by the intersection of larger and smaller ovals, with a further leaf-shaped spot of cobalt blue enamel occupying another part of one of the smaller ovals. The use of polychrome enamel allied to decorative forms in a native…

Copper alloy seal box. Cast rectangular seal box. There are four drilled holes of diameter c.3mm in the base of the box, each hole positioned towards a corner. A flange served as the sides of the box; this is interrupted in the middle of each side. Drilled holes in opposed walls, of diameter 1.5mm, imply a rectangular lid hinged at these points, matching the form of the box, as opposed to the more common rhomboid or pear shapes. Suggested date: Roman, 100-250. Length: 20.6mm, Width: 20.6mm, Thickness (wall): 1.1mm, Height: 5.4mm, Weight: 3.32gms

Copper alloy seal box lid. Cast rhomboid plate with a knop at either end of its long axis on its upper side. Below these, paired lugs at one end are for a hinged fastening, with a smaller sub-triangular lug at the opposite end to engage a catch to ensure closure. A rough strip between these features and on the same side of the object might suggest the loss of either a decorative element or lettering. Abraded. Suggested date: Roman, 100-250. Copper alloy seal box lid, Andrews P3D3. Cast oval or teardrop-shaped lid with a terminal knop at its narrower end and a projecting U-shaped lug with drilled hole of diameter 2.5mm on a stalk at the wider end. A flange runs round the underside to engage with the box [lost]. The top has a border and a field apt to receive enamel, though only pale [probably stained] green traces of colorant remain. A reserved rhomboid intrudes into the field from the wider end of the lid, and is aligned with a longitudinal rib subdividing a central heart-shaped cell into equal halves. Though the rib is …

Copper alloy seal box lid of Andrews L1. Cast rhomboid box lid with its sides crimped with a knop at each external angle, one being flattened to form a hook to engage as a hinged closure. The top of the lid is occupied by twenty five rhomboid cells retaining traces of enamel. This includes several contiguous cells filled with pale green material, mainly around the outer edges, and others with an orange tinted material. This may suggest a parti-coloured scheme, though as the green tint may derive from copper alloy and the orange from soil, the original scheme is uncertain. Suggested da…

Copper alloy seal box. Rhomboid box together with its hinged lid, the box and lid having sides of equal depth [2.8mm] which meet as a butted joint when the box is closed (which is how it was presented). The bae of the box has paired lugs at one end, with a copper alloy rivet of length 3.6mm and diameter 1.5mm passing through one lug and presumably resting in a socket on the inhner face of the other. The rivet passes through a single lug projecting from the lid. Both lid and box bear a small rounded knop at the opposite end to the hinge. The base of the box has four round holes arrang…

Copper alloy and dark red enamel seal box Lid. Cast lozenge shaped plate with a single drawn wire lug at one end, and flattened and possibly grooved at the opposite end. A stub of wire projects next to the lug, possibly suggesting repair or the relicts of a wire or sprung fastening. A central sunken cell retains crazed dark red enamel, and, below thick corrosion, it is possible this central dot was surrounded by curvilinear cells also apt to retain colorant. Corrosion products are especially dense around the putative fastening gear. Suggested date: Early Roman, 100-200. Length: 2…

On the reverse, within the putative box, a circular rimmed cell is set off-centre. Suggested date: Early Roman, 100-200. Length: 18mm, Width: 15.4mm, Thickness (clear of lug); 1.8mm, Weight: 1.23gms.

The upper surface bears seven compartments or cells arranged in a balanced design of a pair of triangles and a rhomboid either side of a central rectangular panel.
