Ceramic building material. Handmade roof tile fragment of sandy oxidised fabric. The corner of a large thick roof tile with a moulded projecting flange of height 22mm and width 26mm along one edge and at right angles to its upper surface [as formed]. A groove appears alongside the flange on the upper surface of the tile as it was formed. The lower surface [as formed] is stippled from laying out and shaping on a flat surface sprinkled with fine sand. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410

Stone possible roof tile fragment. Fine grained possibly oolitic Limestone, probably burnt to a pink tint, possible roof tile fragment. Abraded. A coating on part of one flat side might represent a plaster torching, a coating applied to the inside surface of a roof. Stone tiles might arrive via the River Trent or Humber to be discovered here. The find spot is in general noted for intense Roman activity. Suggested date: possibly Roman, 43-410

Ceramic building material: roof tile. Two fragments. Sandy fabric with occasional chips of chalk to length 5mm in (a), oxidised externally with reduced cores. Two forms are represented: (a) bears a flange and is therefore a tegula; (b) is curved, and probably an imbrex; the inner surface of this curved tile is heavily sanded from being shaped on a sanded curving former. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410.
Thickness: (a) 26mm (it is uncertain if this is body of tile or the flange), (b): 18mm, Total Weight: 260gms.
