Copper alloy bell fragment. Cast conical bell with a stepped wall towards its apex. The top is crimped and pierced, possibly drilled, as a suspension loop. Iron and sand concretion within the bell probably indicate either an iron clapper or an iron wire to retain one. Abraded, with lower edge frayed, and lightly squashed. Copper alloy bell. Cast conical bell with an open top bridged by a broad integrally cast strap. A pair of drilled holes of diameter 2.5mm are set eccentrically at either end of the strap, perhaps representing a supplementary provision for attachment or suspension. Chipped or miscast, leaving part of the wall of the bell absent. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410 Height: 19mm, Diameter (basal): 22.8mm, Thickness (wall): 1.4mm, Weight: 6.60gms

Cast copper alloy four-sided pyramidal bell with a square base. The sides appear slightly distorted and originally either straight or slightly convex. At the apex is the broken stub of a suspension loop. Four rounded knops or feet are set at the outer corners at the base of the bell. Ferrous corrosion within the bell indicates the loss of an iron clapper. Height: 39.3mm, Width: 32mm, Thickness: circa 2mm, Weight: 24.73g. This type of bell is Roman, perhaps confined to the first century AD. See Clarke (1970-71) for parallels.

Diameter: 23.6mm, Height: 27.3mm, Thickness (at mouth/rim): 1.5mm, Weight: 8.26g. Brown patina. This bell is similar to NMS-9BE81B, and both bells are difficult to date. Bells with four feet are well known from the Roman world (compare pyramidal bells from Scotland, Clarke 1970-71). T…

John Creighton writes: White metal or base silver bell, probably from harness. A hemispherical bell with a circular suspension loop on top. Two holes either side of the suspension loop in the sphere support a wire passing into the interior of the bell, from which the clapper (missing) was hung. MF notes that the suspension loop shows heavy wear. Reference: Hod Hill, volume I, A33, fig. 2. Diameter: 25.06mm, Thickness of bell: 1.36mm, weight: 10.1g.

A cast copper-alloy pyramid-shaped bell. The bell tapers upwards from a sub-rectangular base with a lug in each corner to a shouldered or rounded top. In the centre of the rounded top is an integral perforated suspension loop, which is turned at a 90ยบ angle to the axis of the bell; the direction of the perforation is parallel to the long axis of the bell. The inside of the bell is covered in iron corrosion, which suggests that there was an iron clapper, which is now missing. The height of the bell is 41.9mm, the base is 40.7 x 28.5mm and the weight is 31.83g. Rectangular-based bel…

Possible bell. Conical, hollow, perforated, with loop. Very bell shaped, but no attachment for clapper. Length 24.1 mm, width 23.7mm. Weight: 9.97g The drawing shows a small bell with circular suspension loop and conical body, with three large circular perforations in the body. The rim is shaped into six outcurved lobes, every other one perforated with a small circular hole. The shape and size are reminiscent of a Roman bell; other openwork bells, however, tend to have triangular perforations.
