Steelyard beam fragment. Cast lightly tapered rod of facetted hexagonal oval section with two series of nicks along opposed edges: seven long marks spaced at intervals of c.6mm on one side with a punched dot midway between each pair, and three long marks set 11mm apart on the other. Broken at both ends. Either glossed by wear or recently polished by the finder – the extension of glossing to the ends may hint at the latter. The marks may suggest two scales to use for the adjustment of a suspended steelyard poise or weight, which would travel along the bar. Suggested date: Roman, 43-4…

Copper alloy balance fragment. A cast round section arm of diameter 4.8mm with a semi-circular cut-out across which it has broken, here interpreted as the site of the central suspension for a scale pan balance. The arm has an ornate terminal comprising a four sided and slightly tapered block adorned on all of its sides with chip carved decoration in two zones, with a central dividing line and a rhomboid or diamond shape with incised inner and outer borders above and below it. At the end of the block is a flattened sub-spherical terminal with four glass beads equidistantly set in it in…

Copper alloy balance arm fragment, as kindly identified by Kevin Leahy, correcting an initial erroneous identification by this reporter. Cast rectangular plate with a U-shaped tab projecting from either long edge and with a circular loop at one end, in all cases with drilled apertures of diameter 2.4mm. The loop at the end of the plate has four incised lines beside it, in the manner of a collar, while a saltire with a horizontal line below it is incised on the central part of the plate where one of the side loops projects. This motif appears casually drawn, though not as casually as a…

Copper alloy balance fragment. Cast oval section tapered beam from a hanging balance. The pointed end is lightly grooved leaving an upturned end to retain the cord by which a scale pan would hang. The robust construction may suggest a Roman date, though the simple mechanism has continued in use up to the present day. Suggested date: possibly Roman, 43-410. Length: 43.3mm, Width/Height: 7.4mm, Thickness: 4.1mm, Weight: 6.07gms.

Copper alloy and iron balance fragment. Central beam and one hinged arm from a tiny balance. The arm has a bulbous end, perhaps to permit tied attachment of a pan. A separate pin of diameter 1.5mm and length 3.8mm joins arm and beam. Ferrous corrosion at the centre of the beam suggests provision for the suspension of the set of scales. Dr Kevin Leahy kindly suggests this may be of Roman date, though no other material of that date was reported with it. Suggested date: Possibly Roman, 43-410. Length: 27.9mm, Width: 6.7mm, Thickness: 4.9mm, Weight: 2.12gms.
