Copper alloy weight. Cast discoid weight with an erotic scene depicted in relief on one side. This involves two naked figures: a young man to the left and another party of indeterminate gender to the right. The young man crouches with knees flexed as he thrusts a long rod with a slightly swollen mid part into the rear of the other figure, who is bent over with flexed knee to receive it in the hindquarters; the latter participant may be looking back towards its companion, perhaps contributing to a pointed appearance of the head. One arm, the left, is crooked behind the figure's back, p…

Lead weight. Cast conical weight with an aperture of diameter 5-6mm probably drilled from top and base, with shrinkage lines in its base indicating it was cast in an open mould. Patinated and iron-stained. The mass does not appear among weights from the London waterfront (Egan 1998, Table 15), and this might have served or been converted to serve as a fishing line weight. Some accompanying finds and the surface condition may both hint at a Roman date. Suggested date: possibly Roman, 43-410

Broad period: ROMAN
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy unidentified object. Cast styliform rod of rectangular section with an expended and flattened end with straight and slightly divergent sides. This was probably made by hammering the rod, and horizontal lines or chatter marks on its upper surface may indicate the concluding stages of that process. The other end is blunt and rounded. There is no wear at either end to suggest use of the object as a stylus, despite its form and convenient size. The thick and heavy casting would seem more likely to suggest a Roman date than any other. Suggested date: probably Roman, 43-410.

Broad period: ROMAN
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy possible surgical implement. Cast elongated scoop, of flattened concavo-convex U profile with a tang or stem of sub-rectangular section, probably rounded by wear. Bent at the middle part of the scoop, possibly the result of post-depositional damage. This may be for either medical or veterinary purposes; the latter would perhaps commend a more recent date in the rural context of the find spot. Suggested date: possibly Roman, 43-410.
