Copper alloy mount. Cast oval concavo-convex boss with a cylindrical socket of height 5mm projecting from the middle of its hollow back. Surface markings, probably incised lines, may contribute to an anthropomorphic mask of a bearded face, perhaps representing Silenus; rounded central areas modelled in low relief may represent a nose, lips or other facial features; though which way up is uncertain. Now lightly squashed or crimped, perhaps from an originally round form, with a sub-triangular hole or casting flaw. Suggested date: possibly Roman, 43-410 Length: 23.9mm, Width: 16.4mm…

Copper alloy mount. Cast straight-sided slightly concavo-convex plate with rounded and collared ends. One end bears a drilled hole of diameter 5mm above a simple collar. The other end expands slightly at a first collar, and is constricted at a second, with a rounded end conferring a vaguely phallic appearance. A drilled hole of diameter 1mm here may be a fixing point. White metal plating remains on much of the convex display side. Suggested date: Early Roman, 43-150 Length: 37.4mm, Width: 10.3mm, Thickness: 1.1mm, Weight: 2.60gms

Copper alloy mount. Cast three-dimensional model of a swimming water bird, with a lentoid basal hollow retaining rust or fixative. The bird is modelled with its wings folded against its back, the feathers being indicated by finely-spaced diagonally incised strokes. The neck is erect with a damaged head with a drilled pit for the one remaining eye of diameter 2mm; a short bill is also truncated. The swimming duck design appears on plate brooches as a motif especially popular in the Humber region, but also on vessel mounts. The hollow base may show where this was fixed to a vessel rim. …

Copper alloy possible vessel mount. Cast zoomorphic object in the form of a seated or nesting hen, cf. Mackreth type OBJECT 4.b if a plate brooch; alternatively, a vessel mount to compare in some of its characteristics with NLM-757B02 from Swinhope, Lincolnshire. In this case, the object retains enamel traces, but no trace of integral pin gear in a hollow underside with rounded internal steps. A straight-sided oval body with a straight back has the stubs of a tail and crest at either end, an angled oval-section neck with pointed head in which brow and bill now follow the same line, as…

Copper alloy mount. Cast zoomorphic casting in the form of a bird, cf. Mackreth type OBJECT 4.ax. This might be a brooch or may alternatively be viewed as a mount from the edge of a vessel, as it lacks both pin gear and the enamelled cells typical of plate brooches. A three-dimensional casting represents a ‘waterline’ view of a swimming bird with a rounded head and short pointed beak, and a narrow body of teardrop form. Wings and feathers are not now distinguished by separate moulding. The casting is hollowed underneath to a depth of c.3mm, which could facilitate its soldered or b…

Copper alloy vessel mount. Cast zoomorphic mount representing a miniature bird with a hemispherical pit in its base for attachment. A long neck projects at an angle from an expanded body on which a pair of folded wings are depicted; the head is lost. The body tapers towards the tail, which was probably not separately represented. The feathers of the upper body and neck are depicted as a series of deeply incised angled parallel grooves which are carried all around the object. A similar convention represents the wings, with similar cuts arranged diagonally relative to those on the rest …

Copper alloy mount. Cast mount in the form of a rectangular label with three horizontal nicks at either end and with a crescent with horns upward above it. The object is broken just below a sharp constriction with a horizontal linear border at its top; overall the form possibly imitates a military standard. An integral rivet of diameter c.5.4mm [at its end, where it may be burred] and length 10mm projects from the label to pass through a rove of diameter 14.5mm. Extensive rust here suggests the object was attached to or intimately associated with iron. Suggested date: Early Roman, 43-…

Copper alloy mount, as kindly and promptly identified by Alex Bliss. Alex comments: 'This is the domed front of a Roman lion-head casket mount with an internal iron shank'. A concavo-convex hollow cone with four rounded ascending stages, each bearing relicts of a series of closely juxtaposed curved stamps. Ferrous corrosion appears at the apex, and more extensively within. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410 Diameter: 17.5mm, Height (i.e. protrusion): 10.1mm, Thickness (wall): 1mm, Weight: 3.45gms

Copper alloy mount. A sheet of copper alloy [of thickness 0.5mm], folded or layered to achieve a doubled thickness, with a pair of flat sheet metal rivets [of length in excess of 10mm and head diameter 7mm] which pass through both layers, flattened against the back of the object and burred on what is taken to be its outer side. The object is creased to a right angle, which may suggest it to have been positioned at the corner of a rectangular object. This would be apt to the reinforcement of a box or casket. The execution and finish appear rough, so this may have been for a practical r…

Copper alloy possible mount fragment. Cast object of slightly concavo-convex profile with a flat and lightly hollowed back which appears to have been set flush with the surface of another object. The convex side has a central waisted and collared boss with a rounded top. This side might have resembled the fiercely abraded remnant of an imported form of plate brooch were it not for the dished back and the lack of any fastening gear. Copper alloy mount. A cast plate with straight sides and a large trefoil terminal with three rounded lobes. A pair of holes are drilled through the uppermost lobe and through the centre of the plate, the former is countersunk behind. The other lobes bear centrally placed blind pits, with a line of three more pits in a basal field bordered by single and double incised lines. A grey tint may suggest the presence of lead or tin in the metal mix. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410. Length: 35.2mm, Width: 28.0mm, Thickness: 2.9mm, Weight: 10.60gms

Copper alloy possible box mount. A plano-convex casting here taken to be a crudely cast representation of the mask of a maned lion. The convex display side bears rounded protruberances near the edge, taken as a mane, with central elements for the muzzle. The flat reverse is sunken and bubbled, suggesting the object was cast in an open mould. The lion head mount, and the leonine image generally, was associated with Death and funerary contexts in the ancient world. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410. Copper alloy and iron probable mount. Cast bell-shaped discoid mount with boss with a central pit on its concave upper side, waisted below this. The stub of an iron fixing pin protrudes from the flat base. This is of rectangular section, width c.7mm, and resembles a knife tang more than it does a fixing - an alternative identification as a post-medieval knife pommel might therefore be entertained. Copper alloy and iron mount. Cast circular bell-shaped mount with a groove running around a projecting central lug with indented centre. The object is tapered in profile with the iron stub of a fixing pin projecting from its base. Circumferential rings on the display face may suggest finishing on a lathe, which may also explain the pit at the middle of the central boss. Suggested date: possibly Roman, 43-410. Copper alloy probable mount. Heavily cast plano-convex discoid mount with two drilled fixing holes of diameter c.4mm towards its outer edge, one actually straddling the rim which passes around the edge. A motif moulded in strong relief depicts a hound with jaws agape and head lifted to the right, with its body coiled back on itself with a short stumpy tail to left. The forelegs appear together and are bent at the elbows while the hind limbs are more widely separated. The impression is of an animated rendition of an excited hound whose distortion to fit a round field is in part excused…

Copper alloy mount. Cast plate in the form of a bovine head with short horns, rounded ears and a waisted muzzle. Incised straight and arced lines economically confer an impression of relief at the forehead, between the eyes and down the length of the head, and also outline a pair of eyes at the outer edges of the head, with another similar feature at its apex between the horns. These three circles are of external diameter c.3mm, each with a central circular dot of brick red enamel of diameter c.2mm. Copper alloy possible mount. Cast flat-backed plate with central aperture 12mm square which is framed by a stepped border which protrudes most markedly next to the aperture. Sub-triangular knops project from the corners and from the mid point of each side; these may originally have comprised a two part motif with a smoother apex and textured base, perhaps resembling an acorn motif. The object is lightly curved, though whether this is a significant feature or the result of post-depositional damage is uncertain.
