Object type: COIN HOARD
Broad period: ROMAN
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Group of 13 Late Roman coins excavated from the same hole; the finder asserts the objects form a single group. Some coins show evidence of having been overlapped by others. However, the suspected date-range suspected tends to militate against this: either parts of two superimposed or juxtaposed hoards have been retrieved together, or some other agency of site formation obtains - for example prolonged deposition at a well, spring or temple. The coins are provisionally described thus: 1: Copper alloy Coin. Nummus of House of Constantine (306-361), commemorative Constantinopolis is…

Lead possible Curse Tablet. Rectangular plate cut from cast sheet of thickness 2.5mm, neatly rolled into a loose tube. Patinated overall, and with soil trapped within. As a curse tablet, the lead object, like a miniature axehead and numerous later Roman coins, may hint at the proximity of a temple or shrine. Suggested date of the curse tablet: Roman, 40-400. The finder reports the object was recovered threaded through a ring, and this configuration is illustrated. The lead is lightly grooved by the ring, though also here patinated as heavily as elsewhere. However, the ring, of copp…

Copper alloy possible Plate Brooch fragment (cf Mackreth type British Plate 3.biii). Cast flat-backed disc with central round aperture of diameter 10mm. This is surrounded by two concentric ridges and a rim which also stands in relief. The central ridge bears finely billeted decoration; the outer rim and inner ridge appear plain. Encrustation leaves it uncertain whether the zones between ridges are also plain. Against the tentative identification advanced, there is no sign of either fastening gear or gilded decoration, and the protrusion of the rings is more modest than on plate brooc…

Copper alloy possible Penannular Brooch, Mackreth type PEN k1.b.. Cast band, of round section towards its ends and of D-section at its thicker mid point, with a single rounded bulbous terminal, and a break where another may have been lost. One side of the band is notched at its thickest point, with wear post-dating this indentation, which may mark the pin position. Mackreth's 2011 corpus illustrates a single brooch of comparable size (plate 146 no. 3429) among a class of generally larger brooches. Suggested date: Early Roman, 75-150. Diameter: 13.5mm, Thickness: 5.0mm, Weight: 2.43gms.

Copper alloy brooch. Cast headstud brooch, Mackreth type Headstud 3.c. A three coiled spring is drawn out from a spur at the back of the head, with a separate coil alongside it with a pointed end which clasps the underside of the brooch head. An axis bar is retained by these separate coils. It lies behind a flat Y-shaped head with paired concavities at the back, presumably serving as seats to help retain the spring; the splayed form of the head obviates a requirement for separately defined wings. A small forward-pointing hook projects from the top of the head. A drilled hole of diamet…

A telephone call received on the afternoon of Sunday 13 September 2020 alerted this reporter to the discovery of a large lead object on a Roman site outside Rudston, East Riding of Yorkshire, by two metal-detectorists. I agreed to attend to view the site the next day, with a view to the archaeological retrieval of the object if feasible. A cast lead flat-based cylindrical vessel with an internal fringe of projecting iron nail shanks, driven from the outer side, was identified. The object was 600mm in diameter, flat-based, with a plain squared rim at the top of a vertical wall 100…
