Copper alloy brooch. Cast circular plate brooch, Mackreth type British Plate 1.f, no. 10688. A triskele or three-armed figure with a pellet at the end of each arm defines a central cell infilled with [now] pale buff enamel. Beyond this figure a further cell is bounded by an outer rim. A central reserved dot also appears. The reverse bears opposed lug and catch plate. Suggested date: Roman, 150-250. Diameter: 19.5mm, Thickness (clear of pin gear): 1.2mm, Weight: 2.60gms

A trapezoid top loop bears a drilled hole of diameter 5mm, and would assist the suspension of the object. A pair of short thick rectangular wings with vertically grooved front conceal a tubular case for an axis bar retaining the stub of a hinged pin. The head is surmounted by a horizontal ridge with the stub of an integrally cast loop above it. A short D-section upper bow is sharply curved where it clasps the wings, and then expands with a doubled collar moulding at the top of an integral stud with deep gutter around a reserved central annulus. The block bears three tiny lozenges of cobalt blue enamel, an identical feature to that observed on NLM-749E8C. This indicates the object has become detached from a brooch, possibly a headstud brooch and possibly of Mackreth type Headstud 9. Copper alloy brooch fragment. Drawn wire top loop retaining a separate ring of diameter6.8mm with butted ends to its band, and retained within a cast and perforated rectangular block through which the loop passes. The block bears three tiny rhomboid lozenges of mid blue enamel. The enamel may suggest this to be from the top of a headstud brooch of Mackreth type Headstud 9. One of two almost identical objects, probably made at the same workshop, reported from this site. Copper alloy brooch. Cast hinged Colchester derivative brooch, Mackreth type CD H 1.c. Tubular wings bearing finely executed vertical mouldings along their entire extent on the front retaining an axis bar for a hinged pin; the reverse of the case is entirely plain. The wings are clasped by an oval section bow with a central ridge bordered by finely incised gutters. The bow also bears a series of grooves flanked by incised lines extending from the midpoint ridge on its display side; these define triangular fields down the bow.
