Lead and iron steelyard weight. Cast conical weight with the stub of an embedded iron loop at its apex. Dimpling of the flat base may suggest this was uppermost when the object was cast - or recast - in an open mould. The latter suggestion arises from a supplementary layer of lead which has congealed around the lower broader part of the object, presumably as a measure to adjust the poise. This adjustment brings its mass close to one averdepois pound [454gms], perhaps for use as a standing weight, which might hint at later alteration. Patinated. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410, possibly …

Copper alloy mount. A cast Y-shaped object with a central concavo-convex [i.e. hollow behind] central boss. Each arm of the Y has curved sides and a rounded terminal knop. The base of the figure is also knopped, producing a trilobate form. An integrally cast rivet of length 6.2mm and diameter 2.6mm with a flat burred end projects from behind this terminal, and indicates the thickness of leather through which it passed. Copper alloy mount; the finder kindly suggests from a strap. Cast trapezoid plate with an off-centre rounded boss with a longitudinal central groove, of vulvate form, though this might also reference the exaggerated boss of a shield of native style. The form and robust construction might suggest a derivation from military equipment. Abraded. Suggested date: Early Roman, 43-200 Length: 28.5mm, Width: 14.6mm, Thickness (clear of rive…
