Copper alloy brooch. Cast hinged plate brooch, Mackreth type British Plate 6a. A concavo-convex boss has two ones of small triangular cells, some retaining enamel which suggests an original scheme of alternating red and blue. A pair of U shaped lugs on the back retain the stub of a hinged pin on a short axis bar; the stub of a catch plate projects from the opposite side. Fiercely abraded and lightly squashed, leaving it uncertain whether the original form was oval or circular. Suggested date: Early Roman, 75-175. Length: 27.2mm, Width: 14.1mm, Thickness: 0.8mm, Height (of boss, clear…

Copper alloy possible Plate Brooch fragment (cf Mackreth type British Plate 3.biii). Cast flat-backed disc with central round aperture of diameter 10mm. This is surrounded by two concentric ridges and a rim which also stands in relief. The central ridge bears finely billeted decoration; the outer rim and inner ridge appear plain. Encrustation leaves it uncertain whether the zones between ridges are also plain. Against the tentative identification advanced, there is no sign of either fastening gear or gilded decoration, and the protrusion of the rings is more modest than on plate brooc…
