Mortar bust. Model of a head. This object is hand moulded in a coarse sandy lime mortar with abundant inclusions of dark shattered flint of length up to 5mm, and with sparse flecks of golden reflective material on its smoothed surface - from examination under a hand lens probably not mica flakes; they may originate in local sands, or might even be tiny particles of naturally occurring gold from glacial drift. The material is freshly exposed at a recent ragged break at the neck. The surface was smoothed when moist, conferring a quasi-slipped finish and appropriately fleshy tone, though…
