Fired clay spindle whorl fragment. Circular, probably globular with flattened upper and lower sides, object with a drilled [now] off-centre hole of diameter 6mm. Stained with pitch, paint or burning across part of its surface, possibly after being chipped. The small size would be suitable for a Roman spindle. Despite its large size, the lightweight material would make this whorl suitable for spinning a fine yarn. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410 Diameter: 30.2mm, Thickness: 15.9mm, Weight: 13.48gms.

Pottery. Samian body sherd from a large bowl with moulded figurative decoration along its outer wall. The motifs appear to include [L to R] a cantharus or wine jar; a bordered scene with vertical limits of a chain of small ovulos and a thicker basal bar, the scene including a small altar and the lower edge of a robed figure; and the very edge of a curved possibly circular motif of paired lines. The sherd is broken on all sides, though the breaks are either fairly fresh or very fresh. Robert Hopkins kindly enquires whether the bar below the bordered scene may be a potter's stamp. …

Pottery bowl body sherd. Fragment of a Samian Ware bowl, possibly of Dragendorff form 37, with moulded figurative decoration in two compartments separated by a beaded string. In the left compartment is a bear its with head down, below an eight petalled rosette. In the right compartment is part of a figure wearing a tunic; his right leg is raised and rests on a bucket shaped object while the left leg is straight; a right arm appears crooked, and may grasp a [?bucket] handle; there is an open disc below the 'bucket'. Suggested date: early Roman, 100-200. Weight: 13.95gms.
