A lead biconical steelyard weight with one iron loop, probably dating to the Roman period (AD 43-410) although a later (Medieval or Post-Medieval) date cannot be ruled out. The loop extends from one apex and is complete. The steelyard weight measures 56.14mm in height, 49.08mm in max.width and diameter and weighs 470g (to the nearest 2g). The form is usually considered as Roman, and the beam balance is thought to have been lost in Britain between the end of the Roman period and the later medieval period when it was reintroduced from the continent.
