A copper alloy finger ring. The ring has an oval hoop which is roughly oval in cross section with a convex outer surface and a convex, although slightly flatter inner surface. The hoop is truncated. The bezel is sub-oval in shape and appears flat with no evidence for a lip (if it had a lip, this would have held the gemstone). It’s possible this ring did have a lip, but it has been lost due to wear.   While it can’t be proven to be Roman, given the distribution of Roman finds within the area, coupled with similarities to other rings recorded on the PAS databa…

A knee brooch of Roman date. The head is cylindrical, open underneath, but missing the iron rod axis and spring. From the head, the bow, rectangular in section, arches, tapering before expanding in a trapezoidal foot with truncated catch plate. The front of the brooch bears decoration in the form of recessed swirling patterns which in places still retain red enamel. The reverse of the brooch is plain.

A tapering bow brooch of Roman date. The brooch has a sub-rectangular truncated head and two opposing wings. The reverse of the head includes traces of the hinge, but there is no trace of the bar or pin. The sub-rectangular in cross section bow emerges from the truncated head and tapers to a break. The remainder of the bow, foot and terminal are missing, as well as the catch plate. The front of the bow is decorated with four vertical ridges which create three recessed rectangular spaces which would have likely held enamel. Below this is a single perpendicular ridge running across …

A probable Roman brooch fragment, only the bow survives. The bow is slightly convex in form, D in cross section. The front of the bow is decorated with circa ten transverse ribs. The reverse is plain. The brooch is truncated at both ends, missing the base, catch plate, and wings. Based on comparable examples, the brooch could potentially be a hod hill brooch.

A copper alloy object, probably the remains of a brooch. The find is heavily truncated and only the main tapering body of the brooch survives. There are no traces of the wings, head, pin, foot or catch plate. Given how heavily truncated the find is, it is not possible to determine a specific classification for the find, although it can be tentatively suggested to be a Roman brooch.

A copper alloy Roman brooch, possibly a tapering bow brooch. At the head two opposing wings remain, although they both appear to be slightly truncated at each end. While you can see where they would have sat, there is no trace of the pin or hinge. There is no evidence the brooch would have included a head-loop. From the head the bow tapers and curves sharply, before tapering further to a rounded point. The catch plate remains although this is truncated and damaged. The surface of the brooch is pitted, and no visible decoration remains.

A blue glass bead with a slightly off central perforation. The bead is broadly bun / globular shaped and is light blue in colour. The bead has a decorative white stripe of glass within the matrix. Glass beads are common finds from the late Iron Age - Early Medieval period, however stylistically this form is likely to date from the late Iron Age or early Roman period. Dating beads visually is very difficult, however given similar beads are recorded as being of Iron Age to Roman date, this has been tentatively suggested for this find.

A lead disc weight. The weight is circular form and includes a central circular perforation. The circular perforation may have been used to suspend the weight, but it could also have been used as a means of transporting the weight (for example, hung on a belt). Lead weights in general are difficult to date as they have remained relatively unchanged from the Roman to post medieval period.

A fragment of copper alloy brooch. The fragment is sub rectangular in section. The object curves at one end before widening slightly. Both ends of the fragment are truncated while the find has a dark patina. The find likely formed part of a brooch, potentially a bow brooch, although due to how heavily truncated the object is, it is not possible to identify a specific type to the find.
