An incomplete Roman copper alloy brooch, probably dating to c. AD 50-200. The surviving fragment comprises of the foot and catchplate only. The foot is sub-rectangular in cross section at the break with the bow, and from here the fragment tapers into an unelaborated catchplate, which is triangular in plan and has a lip or pin rest curving to the right. There is no raised ridge to indicate a continuation of the bow - rather, the fragment is completely flat along its left edge. There is also no decoration present. An incomplete cast copper alloy Nauheim Derivative, La Tène III brooch of late Iron Age to Roman (c. AD 25-100) date. The brooch is cast as one piece. The spring is coiled with four loops made of a thick copper alloy wire (2-3mm thickness). One of these coils is broken as it emerges from the reverse, and before it curves upwards and then back towards the reverse of the brooch, where it would have developed into the pin (which is therefore entirely missing).
