A complete glass Bead of Roman to Medieval date (AD 43-1500). The object is composed of blue glass and is an oblate spheroid, flattened at top and bottom and has a small circular perforation running between the two flat faces. Glass beads are very difficult to date with any certainty without supporting contextual evidence or diagnostic features. A quantity of Early-Medieval material has been found in the vicinity of this object suggesting a similar date may be likely though a later date cannot be ruled out. Similar examples can be seen on the Portable Antiquities Scheme Data…

report by T Hylton: The neck from a cylindrical narrow necked unguent bottle in pale green glass (Fig 7, 2). On the inside of the rim there is a shallow horizontal groove, indicating that the vessel has a rolled rim (Price and Cottam 1988, 22). This manufacturing technique was prevalent on first and second century vessels. It was from the same pit (339) as the fourth century coin hoard, suggesting that it may be residual in this context. Residual?.

A Roman glass annular bead. The bead measures 26 mm in diameter and has a central perforation of 8.5 mm in diameter. It is 15 mm thick. The glass is of a very dark opaque blue, almost black in colour and has further coloured glass applied as decoration. This decoration consists of four unequally spaced ‘eyes’ of concentric rings, with a white glass outer ring and a deep blue inner ring. There is little regularity in the eyes, with some of them larger than others, and inner rings of different sizes. The rings are spaced around the circumference of the bead. In the Roman period an…
