Lead probable steelyard weight. Cast conical lead weight with small apical hole and a larger hole in its base. It is just possible that the body of the weight was cast in two stages, and probable that it was cast in an open mould, inferences from the appearance of the base with shrinkage lines and/or a discernible separation between two putative stages of manufacture. A tall plano-convex form might appear on a Roman steelyard weight whence the iron hook was withdrawn before deposition - hence there is no trace of rust staining. Dave Haldenby kindly notes that this weight could be con…

A lead alloy steelyard weight of uncertain completeness and probable Roman date, c. AD 43-410. The weight has been cast and is conical in shape, with the stub of an embedded iron shank evident at its base. The object has a dusty white patina apart from some dents and scratches. The diameter at base of the weight is 35.95mm with a height of 36.23mm and a weight of 205g. Steelyards are portable ‘scales with beam arms of unequal length’ (Crummy 1983, 99), rather than being an equal-arm balance. The material being weighed was suspended…

Lead and iron steelyard weight. Cast conical weight with the stub of an embedded iron loop at its apex. Dimpling of the flat base may suggest this was uppermost when the object was cast - or recast - in an open mould. The latter suggestion arises from a supplementary layer of lead which has congealed around the lower broader part of the object, presumably as a measure to adjust the poise. This adjustment brings its mass close to one averdepois pound [454gms], perhaps for use as a standing weight, which might hint at later alteration. Patinated. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410, possibly …

A lead alloy steelyard weight probably dating from the Roman period (AD 43 - 410). It is biconical and has an iron suspension loop (broken) at the top. The iron projects right through the weight and out of the base. Weights of this form are usually considered to be Roman, but the steelyard was also used in the late Medieval and Post Medieval periods. The lead has a white patina. Compare HAMP-2D7A82.

An incomplete lead alloy steelyard weight, probably of Roman date (AD 43-410). The weight is biconical with remnants of a large circular iron suspension loop shaft protruding from the top in the form of a two short, closely spaced iron projections. The form is usually considered as Roman, and the beam balance is thought to have been lost in Britain between the end of the Roman period and the later medieval period when it was reintroduced from the continent.
