Object type: HARNESS FITTING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy strap terminal originating from a probable military cavalry harness dating to the Roman period, c. 43-100 AD. It is cast in one piece, consisting a central recessed circular body with a moulded concentric circular motif and a small circular aperture at its centre, from the upper and lower edges of which project broadly triangular arms which are 'D' shaped in section. The terminal end of one arm is broken away and around half of the other, each of which originally would have demonstrated a projecting attachment lug on the reverse face of the object. Pre…

Two struck flint flakes of probable later prehistoric date (Neolithic/Bronze Age) dating c. 4000-750 BC. Both are relatively squat hard hammer secondary removals, demonstrating c. 20-30% cortex on their dorsal faces. They have been struck from a core of relatively translucent mid-grey flint that in places is patinated to an off-white colour with traces of iron staining, though are otherwise preserved in relatively fresh condition. Lengths; 53.31/46.60mm. Combined weight 30.02g.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy buckle frame dating to the Medieval period, c. 1250-1400. In form it broadly corresponds to Meols type 10, with knopped outer edges to the recessed outer frame (decorated with a tightly packed series of transverse grooves), an offset strap bar and overall oval form. From the outer frame (at the terminal knops and midpoint) three separate prongs project outwards, demonstrating circular lobed terminals inlaid with white paste, a feature which is apparently unparalleled on other comparable buckles of this form. One of these prongs is broken away in old dama…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy spur buckle dating to the Medieval period, c. 1250-1400. It demonstrates an oval frame with a prominently knopped outer edge, to the back of which is attached an integral sub-rectangular tapering plate. At the junction point between the frame and plate is a circular aperture clogged with a clump of ferrous corrosion product, which consists the remains of the original iron pin. Directly behind this is a second clogged aperture containing the remains of an iron rivet, followed by the edge of a further aperture before the object truncates abruptly in old d…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy buckle dating to the Medieval period, c. 1250-1400. It is of Meols type 4, demonstrating an oval frame with offset strap bar and prominent knop (and co-incident grooved pin-rest) on the outer edge of its frame. The attached plate is missing, though otherwise it is preserved complete. Around the strap bar the wound pin is visible, demonstrating a prominent collar before it tapers to a point. Preserved in good condition with an even green patina, it measures 22.28mm long, 15.34mm wide, and 2.50mm thick at the thickest point of the frame. It weighs 2.11g. …

It has a circular main body decorated with a series of five transverse grooves, attached to the upper and lower edges of which are two integrally cast circular terminal lobes. Each of these demonstrates a central circular aperture designed to accomodate a single circular-sectioned copper-alloy each, though now only a portion of one of the original rivets survives intact. An incomplete cast copper-alloy fragment of an early Post-Medieval spoon, dating c. 1550-1650. Only the base of the handle and the upper section of the bowl survive, with the rest of the object broken away in old damage. The bowl itself would probably have been originally fig shaped, while the handle is sub-oval in section, though the form of its terminal remains unknown due to breakage.
