A worked bone probable weft beater (or pin beater) of Early Medieval to Medieval date, about AD 700 - 1200, or another similar pointed tool such as a stylus. An unusual copper alloy probable pin beater, a circular-sectioned shank tapering to a point at both ends, with two broken transverse grooves near the mid-point. Diameter 6mm. Length 125mm. The pin beater would have been inserted between individual warp threads and used at right angles to the plane of the weft. A worked bone probable pin beater or thread picker, used to release knots and tangles during weaving. The implement is 103.1 mm long and is pointed at one end, showing evidence of being heavily used. It is smoothed and well polished. The artefact is 6.8 mm wide and 10.8 mm thick. There are two grooves, one on each side which have been produced by the thumb and forefinger of a person through prolonged use. Such aretefacts are well known from early medieval and medieval contexts and as such it is likely that this implement is Saxon or Norman in date. A similar artefact is illustrated in …

Polished bone point, probably of medieval or post-medieval date. The implement is sub-rectangular in profile, with curved sides and flat faces. The tool tapers gently along its length, with a more pronounced taper and rounded profile near the tip. The end of the implement has been shaped to a diagonal. The point of the pin is missing, with a recent break. One of the faces displays a more porous bone structure, representing the inner face of the bone. The closest parallels to the implement are medieval bone pin-beaters used in textile manufacture similar to that found at Bedern, York (…
