Ceramic waster fragment. Reduced sandy fabric, delaminating at one end when viewed in section, with an integrally formed rounded boss or blob of diameter 50mm at one end. An irregular fragment with its greater extent of thickness 17mm, increasing to 38mm at the blob. A wavy profile may arise from distortion during firing. It is uncertain what may have been made – or failed to be made - here: brick and tile and coarse and fine pottery are all reported from the same restricted location. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410 Length: 99mm, Width: 83mm, Thickness (maximum): 38mm, Weight: 115.53gms

A piece of fired clay of probably Medieval to Modern date (AD 1200 - 1900), but probably from a waster or ceramic building material rather than a vessel. The fragment has one flat face, thought at first to be the base of a vessel. The two ends are broken, and the two longer sides have a rounded edge. A second coil of clay lays on top if the lower one on one side. The fabric is hard, irregular, buff to orange coloured and has poorly sorted sparse inclusions that are angular and cream coloured, as well as a larger purple stone. The hollow space inside the walls is filled with a layer of…

An unfinished turned bone object, possibly a large button, furniture fitting or even a rondel dagger fitting. Description: The unfinished item is circular (35mm in diameter) with a central perforation (3.05mm in diameter), there is a very small triangular tab at one side and at the other a large irregularly shaped tab on the other other side. Both sides have been heavily polished.and worn. Guiding lines and ware is visible. It is uncertain why the object was abandoned as there does not appear to be a clear fault in the object. Measurements: 62.37mm long, 36.93mm wide, 3.44mm th…

Pottery waster. Greyware, probably a rim sherd from a failed pot which has collapsed in the early stages of its firing, perhaps because the clay was too soft and wet to retain its shape. This is a significant indicator of a pottery production site in the vicinity, though not necessarily one that operated on an industrial scale. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410. Weight: 50.16gms.

Five sherds of post medieval (c.1600 - 1800 AD) ceramic waste. The size and shape of two sherds suggest that they are fragments of floor tile, and the other three sherds are made of earthenware pottery, although the difference in fabric, colour and thickness suggests that they are not all of from the same vessel. Both tile fragments and two of the pottery sherds demonstrate evidence of misfiring, suggesting that ceramic production of some form may have been taking place on this site during this period. The largest sherd measures 36.9mm length, 23.3mm width, 13mm thickness and wei…

Pottery waster fragment or kiln furniture. Hard dull red fabric with voids and bubbling, probably from overfiring. The object has the profile of a strap handle, albeit disrupted, and one flat end is thickly sanded. The appearance of kiln waste, if the identification is upheld, would be of interest in an area where known medieval and post-medieval pottery manufacture sites are scarce. This sherd was kindly examined by members of the North Lincolnshire Pottery Research Group. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1650. Weight: 30.49gms.
