Copper alloy washers. Three small annular objects (a-c): two (a, of thickness 1mm and diameter 11.6mm; and b, of 8mm diameter and thickness 1.2mm) are indented to concavo-convex profile and one (c, of diameter 9.8mm and thickness 1.8mm) thicker and flatter. All were perhaps ancillary to the fastening of larger objects to straps. As they come from a wide area there is scant likelihood of their being associated with each other. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800 Combined Weight: 2.01gms

Lead washer. Cast disc with a central hole through which a circular object of diameter 8.6mm appears to have passed, probably from front to back. Patinated. This object resembles those scraps of lead associated with iron fragments, which are considered to have been intended to retard the corrosion of nails set in exposed locations. There is, however, no trace of rust staining on this object. A handmade nail shank would be of square section, so this might point to analogous activity but of a later date. Suggested date: Modern, 1900-1950 Diameter: 29mm, Thickness (clear of middl…

Lead possible washer. A sub-rectangular fragment of lead sheet with a probably pierced hole of diameter 3mm; patinated. : Lead possible washer. Cast sub-circular object of plano-convex profile with a probably moulded hexagonal aperture; patinated. It is suggested this may be lead poured to secure an iron cramp in a Lewis hole in stone, or perhaps a railing, so as to retard the corrosion of the iron which would otherwise split it. Against this suggestion, there is no trace of rust visible, so if this was indeed its use, the object was removed from its setting after a short period. Were it not for the unusual angular hole, this object would have passed muster as a spindle whorl. Suggested date: Post-Medi…

Lead and copper alloy washer. Cast plano-convex disc with a central aperture through which passes a fragment from the shank of a cast copper alloy nail. The lead is patinated overall. The finder kindly suggests a function as a rove, though lead would not have the strength required for this usage. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800. Lead washer. Small cast disc with an off-centre rectangular aperture of c.4mm by c.3mm; patinated. The form of the hole may suggest a small handmade nail shank was driven through the disc, which was perhaps intended to prevent corrosion of the nail from staining or damaging the object into which it was driven.
