Cast copper alloy drum-shaped object. The object is similar in design to an item found at Winterton Roman Villa, identified as a 'reel', however, this object has a much larger central perforation than the Winterton example. There is no decoration. The object has a distinctive cylindrical drum shape with a narrow centre and flared terminals. The perforation runs through the centre of the object from top to bottom; it is irregularly formed at either mouth. The hole is filled with some kind of concretion or mineralisation. Another suggested use is as a spool, for example for thread.

Cast copper alloy object, possibly the terminal end of a bracelet. The object comprises a bulb with a shank protruding from the centre. The shank is circular is section and is narrow at the join with the bulb, widening slightly as it curves away from the bulb. The curve of the shank appears to be a part of the original design of the object, as opposed to damage. The break of the shank shows some iron inclusions.

Treasure case 2006 T430 Description Fragment of gold strip, embossed with four horizontal lines. In one corner there is a piercing, probably deliberate. The long edges have been folded back such that the folded edge appears on the ‘reverse’ side, from which the embossing has been carried out. Maximum length 30mm; maximum width 17mm; thickness less than 0.5mm; weight 1.21 grams. Identification In all likelihood the piece is more than 300 years old. However it is not possible to assign this fragment to a firm cultural or chronological context. Consequently, in terms o…

Part of a copper alloy object of uncertain date and purpose. Regularly ridged/waisted shaft, circular in section, terminating in two breaks, one at the thin section of a waisted part of the shaft (2.82mm diameter), and one after a fluted section at the 'head' (4.90mm diameter). The shaft has decoration at the widest points of the waisting, in the form of three parallel incised lines. The break at the wide/head end appears to be circled by a band of beading. The object could potentially be part of a stylus, a pin, a pipe tamper etc and would probably date to the Post Medieval/Modern date.

Cast copper alloy object with a broken, hooked terminal. The object is damaged, but some original surface survives, and this shows damage only at the two terminal ends of the item. The hooked terminal is bevelled and sub-circular in section; it is uncertain how far this would have curved over. This is cast integrally with the rectangular-sectioned body of the object. The body is decorated with carved grooves and nicks; it is broken 7mm below the base of the hook. Suggested identifications for this object include an incomplete, small snaffle bit, a manicure item, or a buckle pin.

A cast copper alloy gilded decorative mount or fitting. It has been suggested that the fitting dates to the 9th – 11th century and may form part of a horse harness fitting or personal decoration. It has also been suggested that the object represents the cheek and eye guard from a helmet, which may date to the late Roman period. If the later were true this object would be extremely rare. It is therefore more likely to be 9th – 11th century in date. The object is formed from a plate of copper alloy, gilded only on one surface. The plate has become bent and has folded over on it…

The other face has a raised rectangle in the centre, with a raised triangle on the similarly-shaped terminal. The other end is open; it is uncertain if this is broken, or if this essential to the function of the object.
