A possible stone hand tool dating to the Neolithic, or earlier (c4000 - 2500BC). It is a smooth, possibly sarsen stone, reddish in colour, coarse-grained with crystal inclusions, drop shape, possibly naturally formed in that shape, as sarsen sub sphericals are not uncommon. Or it may have become this shape from tumbling in water. It could have been used as a hammer stone or for grinding corn, but there is no wear on the surface to suggest this. In places the layers making up the stone are apparent. A tapering oval in section. Dimensions: 129.3mm…

A black polished stone tool or implement, of probable Neolithic to Post medieval date (c. 2500 BC - 1900AD). It is oval in plan and sub oval in cross section. The stone is thickest in the centre, tapering down towards each end. It is black in colour with a smooth, polished surface. There are three grooves present which are brown in colour, probably due to the presence of dried mud. Evident on both ends are striations possibly caused by the object being repeatedly rubbed against a hard surface, suggesting that it was possibly used as a burnishing or smoothing tool. It could possibl…

One fragment of worn, sub-angular translucent crystalline calcite with flat cleavage planes visible on three axis and worn, smoothed, sides. Probably naturally formed: no evidence seen for artificial shaping. 29.1mm by 28.3mm by 20.2mm and 24.39g in weight. Although natural and potentially local as calcite does form in limestone the piece was picted out by the finder as unusual in the field. It was found in an area that has produced worked flint of Mesolithic to Bronze Age dte with a focus in the Neolithic and might be associated with the flint as a deliberately selected and…

Carved cylindrical stone object. It has a circular cross-section (28 mm in diameter) narrowing to a smaller cross section at the bottom break (23 mm in diameter), possibly to fit it into a socket. The top end has a diagonal break, Approximately half of the curved surface is deeply carved to represent a robed figure with hands together, possibly in prayer. Under the microscope, the stone has a grain like wood and small visible crystals, consistent with jet. This cannot be confirmed without destructive testing. It is not magnetic.

A complete, stone, possible stylus of the Medieval to Post Medieval period (AD1100-1800). Description: The object is a worked rod of stone, roughly cylindrical in shape with soft, rounded ends. It has slightly facetted sides which are rounded off with possible wear. The upper end of the object is sub-rectangular in cross-section and decorated with a pair of transverse grooves. The grooves run the circumference of the object but the ends don't quite align leaving a short gap. The shaft widens slighly below the decorative grooves gently tapering to a rounded tip which is worn. …

Fragment of a worked stone of uncertain date and function, possibly a whetstone as it appears too thin for a quern. The stone is a well cemented and sorted medium to fine grain sandstone. The fragment is roughly triangular with breaks on all sides and flat top and bottom faces. Across one face is a deep, straight, semi-circular sectioned groove running from one side to the other. On the other face is a shallow, curved, similarly sectioned groove which deepens from one edge to the other and may indicate the piece was used with a rotation action. The fragment is 78.7mm long, and…

An incomplete post medieval lead filled granite stone horse tether, most likely dating to the 19th century AD. The stone is very large, heavy, and would have been spherical in shape, but with a flat base (a large fragment of the stone has broken off). On the top of the stone is a recess which is now filled with lead holding an incomplete iron loop and ring in place. Once set, the ring would have been secure enough to safely tether a horse, no matter what size. The attachment of the ring is still visible, but the bands which would have made up the ring have broken off, and do not mo…

An incomplete fragment of worked stone of uncertain date. Approximately one third of an originally circular stone survives, the remainder now missing due to old breaks. The stone is extremely hard, pale yellow to white in colour, and slightly pink along one of the old breaks, perhaps as a result of post-usage exposure to heat or fire. Both faces are extremely smooth and have central indentations. It appears plausible that these smooth indentations are a product of use-wear, although for precisely what or when remains unclear. The surviving fragment measures 102.24mm in length, 46.75mm…

A stone unidentified object of unknown date. The object is a waterworn flat pebble which has been carved with broad teeth along one edge. The teeth are rectangular in section and prism shaped with crisp V shaped grooves between them. There are four notches leaving three teeth and the two curved ends forming what looks like a crude comb. The other edges of the pebble are smooth and rounded and there is no visible decoration. The straightness and eveness of the cuts may suggest a fairly modern date, as they may be machine made. No parallel or function for this object has yet been identi…

Pale buff sedimentary stone - possibly a fine grained limestone - unidentified object. Trapezoid object with five flat faces and one longer side which is stepped in three stages, the latter probably a natural formation. The material appears unsuitable to serve as a whetstone, a function which the rectilinear form might otherwise admit, and none of the surfaces are so smoothed as to suggest this was used as a rubbing or polishing stone. A broad date range is offered to include the most likely periods for the [often improvised] use of such stone objects. This could originally have been …

A sandstone disc of unknown age and function. The stone is fine grained and speckled with mica. The faces are almost flat, making use of the natural banding in the stone. The edges have been chipped and ground to make the disc circular. It is 67.9mm in diameter and 16.2mm thick. 115.7g. There are similar published examples in Roman Castleford (1998, Cool and Philo) which are interpreted as counters for board games, even given the large size of some, comparable to this example (up to 80mm diameter). Cool and Philo draw comparisons with ceramic and stone discs discussed in Crummy 198…

A worked stone object of uncertain date or function. It is made from a white stone, probably a limestone or chalk, and is in the form of a dodecahedron with twelve evenly sized and spaced pentagonal facets. The surface is worn but there is no trace of any decoration or similar markings. It measures 52.28mm in length, 58.61mm in width and 192.72g in weight. The precise function of this object is uncertain. Hollow copper-alloy dodecahedra are known from Roman contexts (e.g. Allason-Jones and Miket, 1984: no. 3.741; YOYRM-41CD72 or SUR-729950) but their function remains unclear. Given…

A fragment of a shale torus of possible Roman date and unknown function (AD 43-410). The fragment is curved in plan and sub-oval in cross-section with breaks on one face and both ends. It was probably annular in form and it can be estimated from rim chart calculations that it would have had an internal diameter of c. 60.0mm and an external diameter of c. 100mm. Excluding the breaks, the object has a smooth surface and lamination is occurring in places. This object is broadly similar to incomplete tori from the Isle of Wight (Tomalin 1987: 47-48, refs: C 12; C 13) and assumed to be …

An irregular shaped piece of ferruginous ironstone which has been vitrified in places to a dull grey colour. Date unknown. It mildly attracts a magnet.
