Copper alloy strap fitting. A decorative openwork plate with an integrally cast rectangular loop behind its lower rectangular part. The display side presents a pair of solid hemispheres clasped within the arms of a Y-shaped shank with a rectangular panel at its base. A moulded line follows the medial line of the Y, and divides towards its base where it delineates the upper sides of a triangular hole in the rectangular panel. The paired hemispheres recall the form of a dumbbell button, a fastener current from the late Iron Age to the early Roman period, while the whole plate resembles a…

Cast copper alloy bar mount with trefoil terminals in the form of a pair of leaves which open out to reveal a bud which tapers to a rounded knop, and which are joined by a bifid collar at the centre. The two projections of the bifid collar consist of moulded lozenges. The two leaves are divided by a longitudinal ridge. There are three integral prongs on the back of the mount, one at the centre and one at each end. They are all worn and the centre one is broken. The longest is 5mm long. Bailey (2008) illustrates a similar mount that is identified as a belt decoration or stiffener, on p…

An incomplete copper alloy post-medieval (c.1600-1800) hooked strap or belt fitting (probably), broken across its loop and missing the reverse section of the object. It is formed from a single piece of copper alloy, roughly an isoceles triangle in shape with a rounded apex, and decorated to the front with moulded decoration (the details of which is difficult to see due to loss of the original surface of the metal) Just beyond halfway along the object, closer to the rounded apex, is a pair of transverse ribs. Worn asymmetrical decoration in the form of raised diagonal lines (perhaps fol…

Medieval copper alloy strap fitting, Length: 24 mm, width: 27 mm, thickness: 7 mm, weight: 9.8 g. The object is part of a two sectioned swivel fitting and consists of a circular cross sectioned D shaped loop. Each of the flat 'corners' of the D shape are formed by an aminal head with an incised line indicating the start of its neck sitting behind a rounded upper head which has a projecting curved muzzle, gripping the end of a circular cross sectioned, oval shaped loop. This and one half of the loops interior is filled with iron corrosion, suggesting that an iron rod once held the …

An integral rectangular sectioned projection expands from the reverse of either central lobe, bent to meet in the middle forming a rectangular loop. Extensive gilding survives on the front face. Dimensions: length 24.2mm; width 13.2mm; thickness (including loop): 15.3mm; thickness of plate 3.0mm; weight 4.66g. Similar slides are described by Margeson (1993: 40-41, nos. 287-288) as being o…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy post-medieval sword belt fitting dating to c. 1500 - 1700. The fitting is almost complete with the hook missing and erosion damage to the surface of the fitting that has worn away most of the design. Rusted remains of three iron rivets remain in situ on the fitting. The fitting consists of a sub-rectangular plate where a missing hook would have protruded from one end. The plate has a foliate design, with a heart shaped leaf visible at the centre. A narrow border follows the edge of the plate. The reverse side is plain. Two rivet holes are found at the e…

A complete but worn cast copper-alloy post-medieval strap fitting (belt mount) dating from c. AD 1500-1700. The copper alloy strap fitting is a simplistic acorn design. It is sub-oval in plan with one terminal having an integral knop. Bisecting the two halves is a linear groove. The reverse has two circular sectioned integral studs, both of which are incomplete. These studs would pass through the strap leather and hold the fitting in place.

An incomplete cast copper alloy knobbed terret ring of Late Iron Age/Early Roman dating (AD 43 -150). The terret ring when complete would have presumably formed an oval shape in plan. The ring is thicker at the base and narrower at the broken terminals. There is a short narrowed bar section at the base of the terret ring with an inverted triangular shaped broken projection. The narrowed section is flanked by a broadened collar. From the narrowed section the ring then broadens and curves to broken terminals. Located on one edge is a knop which is broadly rectangular in profile. The …

A Roman copper alloy propeller shaped belt stiffener. The item has a flat circular body with a flat trapezod plate extending to either side. Running across the entire width of the stiffener are two raised linear ribs set next to one another. At each end is a rivet hole; one is empty and the other contains a cylindrical copper alloy rivet. Fragment of a suspension loop from a Post Medieval sword belt mount dating 1500 to 1650. The fragment is teardrop- or pear-shaped: rounded at the bottom, with sides tapering towards the top where there is an old break. It is 20mm long, 10mm wide at the bottom and 6.5mm wide at the tapered top end. It is perforated by a large circular hole, 6.2mm in diameter. It is flat in cross-section above the hole, with a thickness of 2.0mm and rather more bulbous and oval in cross-section, with a thickness of 3.0mm, below the hole. The fragment is covered by a green and brown patina and is undecora…

A complete post-Medieval copper-alloy strap fitting (c. 1600-c. 1700). This fitting, possibly for sword belt, is oval (ovoid) in plan and has a suspension loop. The openwork plate is convex at the front and is concave at the rear. There is a suspension loop at one end and a knop at the opposite end. The plate has three vertical tear-drop shaped openings and between these and the knop there is a circular hole. This hole is filled with corroded copper-alloy, perhaps the remains of a rivet. Between the three openings and the ridge adjacent to the suspension loop there may be decoration …

A complete post-Medieval copper-alloy strap fitting (c. 1600-c. 1700). This object, possibly from a sword belt, is in the form of an oval (ovoid) hooked plate. From a 'trefoil' terminal the sides curve outwards and then inwards towards an integral forward facing hook. Between the hook and the plate there is a transverse ridge. The blunt tip of the hook makes contact with its shaft. Along the longitudinal centre line of the plate there are two rivet holes, one at each end. Both are filled with the remains of an iron rivet. A medieval copper-alloy rectangular bar mount dating to c.1200 - 1400; it is missing two separate rivets. The object is rectangular in shape and C-shaped in cross-section, being concave to the reverse and convex to the front. At the centre of either end is a circular rivet hole where it would have been fixed onto the strap. The mount measures 14.1m in length, 3.7mm in width and has a thickness of 0.7mm. It weighs 0.21g and has a depth of 1.6mm. Cf. Egan and Pritchard 1991; 212, no.1137.

A copper alloy artefact, probably a strap fitting such as a strap union. It was originally thought to be of Iron Age or Roman date, but in the absence of similar items on the PAS database, it is now tentatively suggested to date from about AD 1000 - 1200. The object is incomplete, but appears to have been symetrical. It consists of a pair of opposed triangular loops, both springing from a central block. The block is square in profile, but narrow when viwed from the front, rather like a square collar. It is decorated with incised border lines on the front, upper and lower faces. Projec…
