An incomplete cast copper alloy probable slide key from a barb spring padlock, of probable Roman dating (AD 43 to AD 410).
Less than 25% of the slide key is present, consisting only of part of the handle. The handle is sub pentagonal in plan, and rectangular in section. A 'tear drop' (pointed oval) shape void is present in the handle.
It measures 59.70 mm in length, 37.72 mm wide and 3.02 mm thick. It weighs 30.9 g.
The possible slide key is a dark green colour, with an even surface patina.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy slide key of possible Roman or Anglo-Saxon date. Only the bit end survives intact, the remainder of the object now missing due to old breaks. The stem of the key is flat, rectangular in form and at its base folds forwards at an angle of 90 degrees to form a bit with rectangular notch. The front face of the object has punched and incised decoration comprising a border on each side of the incomplete end formed from a vertical row of punched semi-circles within a vertical incised groove.
