Fragment of a medieval of post-medieval copper-alloy skimmer or sieve. It is a slightly curved sheet with seventeen complete surviving sub-square to sub-circular perforations, (2.5-4.5mm in diameter/width) arranged in a lattice. These were punched from one face and retain burrs around their edges on the other. Two of the external edges of the fragment might be original, and these meet each other at an obtuse angle. The other three are certainly breaks as they truncate further perforations. Cf. Margeson (1993), fig.84, Nos. 743 and 745. 15th to 16th century. Length: 66.4mm. Width:…

Medieval/Post-Medieval fragment of incomplete skimmer or sieve, irregular sub triangular (extant dimensions 28 x 33mm) perforated sheet with on curved side possibly representing part of original outside edge, pierced by closely-spaced small, sub-oval perforations, mostly approximately 2.5 x 2mm, although with some variation). 0.5mm thick. Weighs 1.88g. Cf. Margeson (1993), fig.84, nos. 743 and 745. c. 1400-1600.

An irregular fragment of copper alloy sheet, with broken and uneven edges. Two complete, circular piercings (c 2.7mm diameter) remain, with indications of at least six more piercings visible around the edges. These holes appear to form radial lines which suggests a curved perimeter to the original object. Possibly part of a circular skimmer or strainer.

A sheet of copper-alloy pierced with irregular holes, probably the riddle plate of a sieve. Dating is difficult as it could either be an earlier piece made before widespread mechanisation or an improvised one of later date.

Fragment of a sheet copper alloy sieve or strainer, irregular in plan with all of the edges broken and uneven, but originally part of a circular object. Five complete, circular piercings remain, all between 2 and 2.5 mm in diameter. Remnants of at least four more piercings are visible around the edges and it appears that the piercings radiate form a central area and that their is a curved perimeter. The piercings appear to have all been punched from one face and the opposite inside face has black organic matter on the surface suggesting that it was probably used as part of a kitchen i…

A fragment of a copper alloy probable medieval or post-medieval sieve or skimmer. The fragment has a straight edge and c.10mm in from this is pierced with multiple square holes arranged in no particular order. Raised edges around these holes on one face only suggest that they were created with a punch. Only a small fragment of what was presumably a much larger object originally survives. A number of similar objects are illustrated by Egan (1998, 157, fig.126) from late 15th century contexts in London, which he describes as 'skimmers' used for removing items from stew pots. Margeson…

Sheet copper alloy sieve or strainer, circular in plan with irregular circular punches or perforations roughly made from one face. The roundel has been irregularly cut out of sheet and its edge is slightly uneven where it has been torn or damaged. There are twenty-seven perforations altogether and they vary from about 3 to 4 mm in diameter. The object has been hand-made and was perhaps used as part of a kitchen implement or as a drainage filter and looks to be Medieval in date. A similar example was found at Hellesvean, St Ives, excavated from houses dated from the 12th century (Pr…

Incomplete sheet copper alloy sieve or strainer, semi-circular in plan with irregular circular punches or perforations roughly made from one face. The sieve would have originally been round but has been irregularly cut out of sheet. The remaining edges are uneven where sections have broken off or been torn away, leaving open perforations. The object has been hand-made and was perhaps used as part of a kitchen implement or as a drainage filter and looks to be Medieval in date. A fragment of a sheet copper alloy Medieval or Post-Medieval strainer or skimmer. It is pierced with closely placed circular holes. Part of a curved outer edge survives suggesting that it had a fairly small diameter originally and was probably part of a handled skimmer. It has a fine green patina. Egan (1998, 155) suggests that skimmers were used from the 14th century into the early Post-Medieval period. Length: 27.0mm, width: 16.0mm, weight: 0.96g
