An incomplete, bone, potters tool dating from the Medieval to Post-Medieval Period (1400-1800). Description: A piece of worked bone, sub-triangular in plan. The lower edge has been filed into 6 triangular shaped teeth. The external surface is smooth with some surface damage and a crack running from the apex through to the middle of the object. The reverse surface still retains the honeycomb type structure of the bone. The object appears to have been broken at its apex with an uneven break. Copper alloy possible Roman comb: thin trapezoidal sheet plate (0.5mm) with remains of a row of widely-spaced short triangular teeth at broad end. 21 x 26mm. Length of teeth 2mm. Gap between teeth 2mm. A group of very similar objects was recovered from a 4th-century pottery beaker at Chalton, Hampshire. Frere described them as "very puzzling" and without precise parallels. Their findspot suggested "wool combing or carpentry, rather than pottery decoration or the marbling of tiles or plaster" was their possible function, but their "rarity...makes them difficult to interpret" (Frere, S.…

A cast copper alloy potters tool, possibly a tile comb. The object is T-shaped in plan, has a handle with a circular cross-section which develops into a narrowed square frame that may have been the tang for insertion into a wooden or bone handle. The head of the object has a continual wavy line moulded in high relief. Similar objects have been recorded in the literature (e.g. de la Bedoyere 1989, 59; ref. 34b) and also on this database although there is an ongoing debate as to whether isolated examples are indeed Roman tile-combs; many may well be post-medeival pastry jiggers. …

A cast copper-alloy tool: possibly a Roman tile-comb. The object is T-shaped in plan. It is formed of a handle of circular cross-section, which towards the terminal develops a square cross-section over a length of c. 18mm. A possible wooden handle could have been fitted over the square-section portion. The cross-bar at the other terminal measures 27.2mm in length; one side of it would appear to have been bent upwards at a slight angle. Its lower surface has an angular wavy line in high relief, creating an almost ‘pie-crust’ pattern along the comb edge. There are four 'peaks' an…

A Roman cast copper alloy combing tool, probably for tile manufacture (43 - 410 AD). The comb has a vertical arm for a handle which abuts a cross-bar forming the comb. At the outer edge, the arm is square sectioned but it swells into a rounded oval section along the length before it meets the cross-bar. The cross bar has six knops or teeth. On the upper side these have deep slanting incised grooves in between them to form the comb; on the lower side the incisions run down the middle of the teeth. This creates an almost ‘pie-crust’ pattern along comb edge. The teeth are worn, but no…
